Our Sun Burps

Recommended Posts

The sun is acting strangely lately, which may be endangering the earth we are celebrating today. Now the sun is throwing off huge "burps" of burning debris called Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), which NASA has observed ripping the tail off of a comet. They may also affect satellite communications and power grids here on earth, as well as the control gear on airplanes. What's going on?

NASA has a satellite called the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory that orbits the sun and records everything it does. In BBC News, Richard Black quotes astronomer Danielle Bewsher as saying, "You can see [the CMEs] coming from the sun and travelling through space, and potentially you can actually see them hitting the earth," although our magnetic its magnetic field deflects any direct hits.
