forum222
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/...odel_cd=HM120JIQuick google search gives you this. Sata interface. Thank you, morphen, for the tip. i found that page before i entered this forum. unfortunately, the sata adapter (coolgear usb 2.0 multi-function) that i just purchased for the task does not fit: it takes pins and the hd has blades (or whatever the techs call them). further help would be welcomed. Please note that i am quite unfamiliar with hdd and hardware connectivity. forum222
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted September 5, 2008 Moderator Share Posted September 5, 2008 you need a 2.5 enclosure, or get a 2.5 to 3.5 converter.
shihchiun
Well, first off, you'd have to get some sort of adapter to even get the 2.5" drive to fit securely in the 3.5" enclosure. Then you'd need some kind of SATA > IDE adapter, which takes space, as there's actually a circuit board involved. I would say just get a 2.5" enclosure that supports SATA. As for the Coolgear thing... do you have a link to a product page? If it really takes pins it's probably an IDE adapter and not a SATA adapter. forum222
shihchiun, i decided to NOT use the rocketfish enclosure because of space and compatability concerns. i did find an ide-sata adapter bridge board at cooldrives.com which would work for plug-in sata drives which my laptop does NOT have. instead, i will use an adapter cable. your last statement implies that sata connections do not use pins: can you identify an adapter cable that will work with this hd? all sata adapters that i have found use pins. the link for the adapter is http://cooldrives.stores.yahoo.net/saandidehadr1.html after verbally wrangling for twenty minutes with tech support at hp, who initially insisted that the hd has pins, she finally confirmed that the laptop sata drives sometimes have a "drop-in" feature. afterwards, she directed me to two different brands of adapters for PIN-STYLE sata. that chat resultd only in confirmation of what i already knew: the drive has blades and not pins. i have calls into a half-dozen places including samsung trying to resolve this issue. i am still searching for an adapter for this hd... forum222
shihchiun
Ok - this is what a SATA connector is supposed to look like (yes, it's not a notebook drive, but it's the same): (It's the series of 7 gold stripes on the left; the right is for the power connector) So, to solve your problem, just buy a 2.5" SATA enclosure, like any of these. You don't need an adapter, but basically there are two ends. One takes the SATA input, and the other end is the IDE output, which are the pins you see. On the link you posted for the adapter, the SATA (and SATA power) connector is on the right of the box.
forum222
thank you for responding, the link, and attaching that photograph. i followed the newegg link and saw several enclosures that i almost purchased when i visted the store two weeks ago. i chose the adapter cable because of its versatility. "On the link you posted for the adapter, the SATA (and SATA power) connector is on the right of the box." ... so that adapter should, without problems, work with a sata drive? forum222
