jamesVault
Open the command prompt as an administrator and execute the command "compcln.exe". you don't need to open a command prompt as administrator, Just type compcln in the start menu search box and hit Enter (the compcln.exe already has the uac's shield icon on it, that means you'll get an elevation prompt by UAC)

Vambo
On a side note, did this clean up a ton of space for anybody but me? I think it got rid of all my system restore points/previous versions (for shadow copies) but I don't think it was just that because I seriously have like 30 more gb's than before. Yes me too, I got back over 60GB - nice :D
kiyoshi
What would be the fastest way to update to SP2? clean install + windows updates and finally SP2 or clean install + straight to SP2 ?
ozzbo
What would be the fastest way to update to SP2?clean install + windows updates and finally SP2 or clean install + straight to SP2 ? depends what you are doing... is this an existing installation? if you say "update to sp2", one could infer you have an existing installation, so not sure why you need to "clean install"? unless, you are talking about a clean install from the beginning... in which case, you cannot do the latter "clean install + straight to SP2". one needs to download SP1 then install, then download SP2 then install. there is a third alternative... and easiest if you have a good connection... is to download the official SP2 integrated DVD via unofficial sources (or if you are lucky and have Technet/MSDN subscription...) Hak Foo
I'd be a lot less frustrated about this upgrade if you could easily obtain slipstream media. I don't mean "here's a questionable torrent", or "maybe you can get it mail order but it might only work with some bulk-licence agreement you don't have." I mean, put them out in huge stacks at the stores like AOL discs. I have spent most of yesterday and today trying valiantly to build a slipstreamable image. (Hardware compatibility issue made the RTM installer have a fit for all of day 1 and part of day 2) I've finally got a 4.5Gb install.wim file (should have run the post-SP cleaning :p), and I finally found some directions for re-building the image which don't involve "and just fire up that $40 piece of shareware we assume you have". And now it generates a DVD image 200M too large to fit on the @**$*% disc! Slackware is looking appealing.
ozzbo
Hak Foo, I understand your sentiments exactly. I know torrents aren't exactly trustworthy sources for the masses. Definitely not. However, the fact you spent/attempted to make your own image, sounds like you are technically minded. Surely then, even though the source may be questionable, what is wrong with trusting the SHA-1 hash (which is available on microsoft's own site with just 'public guest access' to technet) of the downloaded ISO? The commonly-found torrents contain just the ISO and some text to confirm the build numbers and hashes. There is no other executables. There are no keygens or licences. They're leaked to make things easier for people who have legitimate licences, but really hate the idea of having to install the original Vista, then SP1, then SP2, etc. (just wait another year or so until SP3 comes out.. what fun that process will be :p). They're also for those who don't need a Technet/MSDN subscription for anything else other than to obtain an easier way to install an up to date copy of Vista. I was looking into this technet/MSDN figuring it might be handy, until I realised it's not really suitable for "those who just want to get the latest SP integrated media". There is of course the option of waiting for several months until one can get replacement media with SP2 integrated DVD directly from Microsoft, but who wants to wait that long if you need to reinstall? I certainly didn't, and I don't regret it!
SYBINX
Can anyone confirm this is legit? Yes I just run an update and it just popped up on my screen so I would say yes, Run Windows update.

Jekkaman
but how trustworthy are hashes? can someone fake one? They could fake CRC32 but faking CRC32 and SHA1 at the same time would be very very very hard.... Since the CRC32 and SHA1 Hashes are the same this iso is the msdn/Technet one.
