NVidia GTX470/480 Reviews Stream out

Hope this disappointment will still lower the prices of ATI's 58xx series in the next two weeks. Getting my paycheck at the 10th and I would hate to buy the 5770, and then find out the prices of the 58xx got lower right after.

It just might raise them. Seeing the massive disappointment in what was supposed to be the holy grail of cards, the 5870 might see a surge in purchases.

I loled.

I too have hopes that this will lower the 5xxx series prices, from what I have seen from the GTX400 series is barely better than the 5870, especially when you look at how old the 5870 is now.

Is the GTX 480 faster than the 5870 in most tests? Sure, without a doubt, but you are comparing a card released 6 months ago with a card that just released, of course the just released card is going to bring higher performance.

ATI is probably close to a 5890 (or will work on it since the GTX 4xx series hit), and it will likely match performance with the GTX 480 and force nVidia to drop their prices.

Even then. In most tests it's only 10%-15% faster than the 5870 with also a significant increase in noise, temperature, and required wattage. We still don't know how the 2GB version of the 5870 will do either.

The GTX 480 is also dominated by the 5970 but those are just impossible to get.

Well im quite disappointed, can some please explain to me the point in the 470? As the way its priced (in the uk anyway, ?320) its pretty much the same price as 5870 (?320-350), so why would anyone go for the 470 if that has trouble beatin the 5850 lol.

The 480 i think is a more reasonable price, but still for the amount of power it needs and the temps (93C at heavy load, what about on a hot summers day? wouldnt be suprised if it goes above 100c :s) id go for the 5870.

For nvidia's sake i hope that the poor scores are down to undeveloped drivers, and that they release a new set in a few weeks that drastically improves them. At the moment unless you have ?900 to afford 480 in sli, might as well get a 5870

I believe the 470 is intended to be competing with the 5850, and the 480 with the 5870. Obviously because those aren't reflected in the retail prices, they kinda fall flat with the 470 competing with the 5870.

I'll probably be picking up at 5870 next week as it stands.

The GTX 470 is designed to combat the 5850, its price is not quite there yet, but its price will likely drop once it becomes more available.

As for heat, those are reference coolers, but still that is extremely hot......that is though with the automatic fan control....one of the reviews said if you turn the fan up to 70% it drops the load temp down to 80C, putting it more on scale temp-wise with the 5870.

More than that. You'd need a 1000w+ PSU just to power SLI.

One of the reviews said the TDP of the GTX 480 was 250 watts......2 of those in a system, theres 500w right out the door. The 5870 comes in at around 188w TDP, which is only 376w for crossfire, much more manageable power consumption.

I'll admit I'm a bit of an Nvidia fanboy. That said, I'm hoping that newer drivers will bring up the performance. I'm somewhat disappointed but I've been waiting for these cards since I purchased my 2 9800GT's for SLI. Honestly, I could care less about the heat, power, or noise. My case is well cooled, my PSU can handle the power, and I could care less about noise. I'm been using Nvidia cards exclusively for years and even though the 470 and 480 are a little disappointing. It's still good enough for me not to switch to ATI. Nvidia better get some better drivers out for these things (which they will) and better get their act together for the 500-series.

It's not just the heat, it's the incredible noise the fan make!! Check it out at HardOCP, they put video of the cards running. Vacuum cleaner sound level...

The power/heat/noise and price are killing the new nVidia card. It took all that time for nVidia to be able to be "slightly" better than what ATI is selling for a long while....

One thing I find unfair in some benchmarks, is using 2 x GTX 480 in SLI and comparing it to a 5970, witch is slower than using 2 x 5870.

ATI could come out with a quick refresh of their video card and beat nVidia in all categories, even performance.

There is a 2GB version of the 5870 in the works which will help in some of the games (one of the reviews mentioned some tests were memory limited on the 5870), and they also have not filled out the 5890 slot, which will no doubt give the 480 a run for its money if its not better. You figure, AMD has had 6 months to perfect the 5870 and improve it, they are at a point now where they can start releasing overclocked 5870s with reference coolers that will pick up some of the performance gap as well.

6 months time is quite awhile for nVidia to play around only to get 10-15% faster speeds.

I don't see why people care so much about heat.

They should just market the 480 as a graphics card/ skillet. Game while you're cooking eggs. :D

I can never cook while playing. Always get the food burned, while paying too much attention to the game and forget about the food

Holy hell! That's what gaming cards are doing these days? Last time i built a system was the GF4 TI4600 which was the killer card back then. These things these days sucking tons of power! Those things idle power usage is more than my whole laptop x 2!!

Pathetic. Just like Intel (pre Core 2 line) they thought they were the best and did not innovate and refine their products that much with every major release. Now that nVidia has been high and mighty with their superior cards the past couple of years they finally have fallen.

nVidia has a lot of work ahead of them to beat the ATi 5000 series of cards.

    • I'm not unblocking my camera for this crapola. Sorry, Google.
    • Ummmm that is what is it supposed to do. Just turn if off in settings if you do not want it analyzing your open tabs. Chrome does the same thing with Gemini. Sarfari will do the samething after Apple's AI and even more so with the release of their 27 versions that is now powered by Googles LLM/ML models. Understanding why it is doing it and how it can help you vs jumping to some conspiracy theroy is a much better approach. As long as it can be turned off, all is good. Yes the default should be off but the a lot of people would never discover these features.
    • Just another reason (aside from many others) not to use Edge. Firefox 153.0b5 DEx64 has a similar feature added recently in prior builds that I will turn off at some point when I get around to it. It's the new "Something looks suspicious" page that pops up here and there. It cleverly hides itself between web pages that I've actually visited; as a result, you know, of selecting a web page and telling the browser where to go. The interesting thing is that it does not produce these warnings from pages that I, as the only intelligent user of the browser in my system, have ever directed the browser to open! What seems to be happening is that the browser looks at all the goofy ad links on a web page I do actually open and selects one that "looks suspicious" and then creates the "something looks suspicious" web page, which is neatly inserted, as mentioned, between web pages my RB ("real brain") has directed the browser to load in a session. The thing is, I usually look at links I am considering to follow before I ask the browser to load them, and in cases I have noticed where the link does indeed look suspicious, most of the time I will choose to not follow the link at all. Doesn't everyone do this or something similar? I am picky about what I voluntarily load... (I don't like links that start off fine, with a site designaiton that seems normal enough but then is followed by indecipherable alphanumeric strings many, many lines long, etc. I tend to reject those because they look suspicious. They may not be, but I don't care... I'll stay with Firefox, of course, if for no other reason than they usually let you turn off the junk you don't like. And because it isn't Edge... But at some point Microsoft will come to realize that putting your bookmarks on the left side is a Good Thing for a lot of people, just as Microsoft discovered when it had the bright idea of nailing the Windows taskbar to the bottom of the screen, when for decades Microsoft browsers had left that placement up to the user. They have finally reversed the obscenity of that decision. Finally.
    • Google was using the old CATPCHAs data to train their LLMs. What is the say they won't use this camera data of users to train their LLM? these companies need some strict regulations!
