Bill Gates takes the ALS awareness Ice Bucket Challenge to a new level

Microsoft's current CEO Satya Nadella has already gone through with the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness for ALS, and now its original CEO has as well.

Bill Gates was challenged by Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg yesterday, and now he's made good on the challenge. Gates uploaded a video today of himself dumping a bucket of ice water on his body, but he takes the challenge up a level by designing and building a machine that will help him dump the bucket of ice water on himself.

"I'm glad to give to ALS – it's a great cause," Gates says in the video, which appears to have been filmed on the dock at his home. "But [if] I want to accept this challenge, I want to do it better than it's been done."

Gates has challenged technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, entertainment personality Ryan Seacrest and TED leader Chris Anderson to take the challenge within the next 24 hours. With Nadella and Gates taking the challenge, now Steve Ballmer is the only current or former Microsoft CEO left to dump a bucket of ice on himself for ALS awareness.

....patiently waiting for the first person to die of a heart attack from the sudden shock of ice water....followed by the law suit for promoting such an idiotic stunt in the name of awareness.

Well there was the dude in NZ who died from a heart attack after doing it. He had however downed a litre of Whisky too though.

Clearly no ice and not cold...lame.

How do you know it wasn't cold (and it looks like there is ice to me). Either way I think you are missing the point, it is to raise awareness.

Clearly no ice coming out of that bucket. And of course I'm aware of the point. I just get annoyed by ultra wealthy people who get attention and props (even for a good cause like this) when there are so many "little" people sacrificing so much for every day without accolades. Reminds me of the story of the widow's mite.

It is hard to tell, if you freeze it at the end that looks like ice in there to me. Maybe not a lot, perhaps most of it melted while he was building his contraption. I don't see what difference it makes though. Yes plenty of people do great work without notice every day, that's just the way the world is. If you want to get noticed you have to be famous, and at least he is using his fame and fortune for good. I think that deserves props myself.

Nice job. Glad to see Bill take it up and contribute. He walks the walk as well with the foundation he and his wife have. Good stuff.

This is nothing for Bill to do, remember, the guy took a pie in the face. His home looks pretty. :)

I smell a new challenge... PIE IN THE FACE challenge. :)

Well for a a start there's a news article about the charity in existence that wouldn't have been before hand.

It's called exposure.

Awareness.... This is getting lots of media attention and making people more aware of ALS. It it silly? Sure but that is the point. And not to mention the heafty sum from all those donations from million and billionaires

I think the shocking freeze to your body is supposed to cure ALS.

Well if it has no medical benefit, I wouldn't dump ice on my head.

Its called awareness that inspires people to donate money so that research can be conducted to find a cure or treatment. I would call that a huge medical benefit.

Donations for research make sense, but dumping ice on your head just sounds like something dumb enough that they'd make a South Park episode about it.

Its about generating the most attention. And that is what having famous/well know people doing a silly stunt does. More attention = more awareness = more money

When you have a person worth $76 Billion dump anything on their head, people notice. When people notice the charity makes more money.

As long as this doesn't get into the realms of stupid "one-upmanship" of the Neknominate craze, I don't see anybody saying "are you mad???", especially as this is for charity awareness.

Bill Gates is awesome :)

If Ballmer wants to outdo gates, He would have to do it with his whole new team at the same time. Now that would restore Ballmer's public face and would make him awesome. Although regardless Ballmer is great.
