Get Bing backgrounds delivered daily to your desktop

If you happened to blink this week, you may have missed several key Microsoft announcements. Not wanting to be left out, the Bing team has pushed out a new application to help make Bing part of your desktop.

We all know that Bing is a viable competitor to Google but one trick up Bing’s sleeve are the incredible backgrounds the site puts up each day. If you love these images and have wanted a way to automatically set them as your background, the Bing team has a new tool for you.

The Bing app will change your wallpaper to a high resolution image of that day’s image and it also allows you to search Bing from your desktop.  While the app is not a search revolution, for those who love the Bing images, your day just got a little better.

The application is free and can be downloaded here.

I wish they would take it off Windows Update.
Virus definitions and system updates are ok but Bing Desktop feels like the wrong category.

Can anyone please confirm if they are full screen backgrounds or just the bing-sized wallpaper?

full screen backgrounds

Anybody can check the version please? The "beta" is version 1.0.45.0, what's the version of the application linked on the news?

As usual, the version is inside the "about" menu.

This theme, for me, just downloads all the images and then rotates through them...it doesn't set the wallpaper to 'todays' pic. Is this the same for other people?
(I would rather use a theme, than a fully fledged program to simply change my wallpaper...and I don't really want the desktop search bar)

If anyone can check for me (I'm using a custom theme for Windows 7), is that awesome shot of the Space Needle that was up the other day available? And would someone be able to send it to me if it is?

Working for me.

Yes, it's working for me now. It didn't update immediately when I tried it so I thought maybe the feed had been shut down.

And a little forwards compatibility for Windows 8 one would THINK would be a no brainer. I love MS but this is so typical.

You mean they need to support beta products?

Windows 8 hasn't been released yet.

They don't need to support beta software. Just not restrict it to Win7. There's no reason why it can't work in Win 8.

If you install it on windows 7 and then copy the installed files over to windows 8 it will work.

Windows 8 is currently at what could be called a 'beta' stage. Them supporting Windows 8 with this would essentially be them supporting beta software.

Thanks, Chaos at Dawn!

I know what stage Win 8's is at Calum... But, since the installer is so adamant that you only install it on Win7. They could of just made the requirement of NT6 not specifically NT6.1. Then they wouldn't have done anything to support Win8. They would just allowed it to be installed on Win8.

You've been able to get Bing dynamic wallpaper images for ages on windows, and without the search. They're great and it's really nice to have new stunning images popping up every week. http://windows.microsoft.com/e...ownloads/bing-dynamic-theme

Are they full screen? When the feed was first released, soon after Windows 7's release, the wallpapers were only the size of the Bing homepage image, and they therefore looked pretty bad when one was using a large or medium-sized monitor.

+1

There are a few RSS feed based backgrounds, as this was a feature built into Windows 7 but nobody really used it, as Microsoft's marketing and sales people usually have NO CLUE about what is even in the product they are promoting.

There are Aerial maps and a few other dynamic content themes that are rather interesting.

PS All anyone has to do is right click on the desktop, and hit Personalize. Then click 'Get more Themes Online'. It will open the website that has a lot of 'themes' including the 'dynamic RSS' themes.

Other PS: Users can create their own themes, including their own RSS based themes, it is a fun feature that nobody seems to realize is available.

back when bing first started doing its huge backgrounds i thought someone made a script that would do the same thing only without the need for a bing search box.

Cool idea but the needs to lose the search bar.

If you pin the search bar to the top of the screen it'll autohide and show when you mouse to that section.

Just closing it works for me.

You don't get the new background each day then, unless you restart it and close it each day, which is a bit of a hassle.

Ya, not true... Been running it for a couple of weeks now, and it changes everyday, and hasn't been closed once.
