Patch Tuesday: Here's what's new for Windows 7 and 8.1

Today is Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of the month when Microsoft releases updates for all supported versions of Windows. Alongside Windows 10, older versions like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 get updates as well and that includes their corresponding Windows Server versions.

This month is a pretty easy one, as all of the updates have the same changelog. Here's what got fixed:

  • Addresses an issue that may prevent the use of the Seek Bar in Windows Media Player when playing specific files. This issue does not affect normal playback.

  • Security updates to Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Wireless Networking, Windows Kernel, and Internet Explorer.

If you're on Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, the monthly rollup that you'll get is KB4471318, and you can manually download that here. There's also a known issue to be aware of in this one:

Workaround

After you apply this update, the network interface controller may stop working on some client software configurations. This occurs because of an issue related to a missing file, oem.inf. The exact problematic configurations are currently unknown.
  1. To locate the network device, launch devmgmt.msc. It may appear under Other Devices.
  2. To automatically rediscover the NIC and install drivers, select Scan for Hardware Changes from the Action menu.
    • Alternatively, install the drivers for the network device by right-clicking the device and choosing Update. Then choose Search automatically for updated driver software or Browse my computer for driver software.

There's also a security-only update, KB4471328, which you can download here. This update does not contain the known issue listed above, nor do any of the other updates.

Those on Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 will get KB4471320 as their monthly rollup, and you can manually download that here. The security-only update is KB4471322, and you can download that here.

Finally, Windows Server 2012 users will get KB4471330 as their monthly rollup, which can be manually downloaded here. The security-only update is KB4471326, and you can get that here.
