The Battlefield franchise last had a battle royale mode all the way back in 2018, when Battlefield V offered Firestorm as a separate 64-player mode. EA then hinted at the return of battle royale to the series when it first unveiled Battlefield 6 last month. Now, with only weeks left before launch, details about the brand-new battle royale have finally been revealed.
Battlefield Studios" latest closed testing "Labs" report published today confirmed that it will begin testing "a Battle Royale built on Battlefield"s unique DNA" this week. It is unclear if the mode will be available at launch for Battlefield 6 or will be added later, perhaps as a free-to-play experience to gain more players.
"We see a great opportunity to infuse the core Battlefield pillars of class-based squadplay, tactical destruction, and vehicle combat into the Battle Royale genre to create a high-stakes and adrenaline pumping gameplay experience," said the development team, describing its new battle royale experience. "This is Battlefield’s twist on the classic formula, so you can expect to find all of the core principles of Battlefield taking place within this mode."
While no footage has been shared officially yet, the Battlefield 6 battle royale"s map is described as "epic" by the developer, with transport and armored vehicles available to bring squads to the available points of interest. Destruction will remain a major part of the experience too, with everything from walls to entire buildings being options for explosives.
Each round of battle royale will host 100 players split into 25 four-player squads, with the last remaining team being the victor. Each squad member can choose a class they want to play, offering differently balanced teams depending on their game plan, but they cannot be changed once the round begins. Communications happen using in-game pings, text, and voice chat.
Compared to other popular battle royale games, the ring that shrinks the map as time goes on is not survivable at all, even for a moment. The development team says that this will be the "deadliest ring in BR."
"There’s no jumping in and out of it, no using it for cover, no walking through it - if you get caught in it, you are done," adds the developer.
Battlefield 6 is out on October 10 across PC (Steam, EA App, and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
