Cancelled Perfect Dark reboot from Xbox was aimed at reviving Secret Agent genre

It was in 2018 that Microsoft announced the formation of The Initiative as a brand-new first-party studio based out of Santa Monica, California. Only a couple of years after that, it was confirmed that the Xbox developer was making a reboot of the classic first-person shooter Perfect Dark starring Joanna Dark. Unfortunately, The Initiative was shut down by Microsoft earlier this year as a part of its mass layoffs, with its debut project also being cancelled.

While Perfect Dark only received a couple of trailers and barely any gameplay information during its development period, a new report has now surfaced with more details. MP1st has managed to get ahold of internal documentation related to the project, with it containing Perfect Dark concept art as well as reports on what the game"s systems would involve when playing.

Per the documentation, the game had been in the Vertical Slice 1 stage up until April of 2025, which means it would have had a playable demo for internal use, used for checking out how it would have looked and felt at launch. It seems the game had an episodic release structure planned for it too.

The project had wanted to bring back the "Secret Agent" genre that had gone dormant in recent years, letting players become an espionage agent. As expected from a reboot, the team had wanted to keep the feeling of the original N64 title while delivering a modern experience to fans.

As for gameplay, the report states that an Adrenaline System was being made that would let Joanna Dark use it for bullet time, heal, do more damage, move faster, and more via upgrades to this limited-use component. Some of these aspects can be seen in the first gameplay demo Microsoft showcased in 2024.

As revealed by Bloomberg"s Jason Schreier, Take-Two had been in talks to take over and continue the Perfect Dark project, but negotiations had failed, leading to the cancellation.
