Google confirms that its new Chromebook Pixel "will be coming out soon"

It"s been two years now - almost to the day - since Google unveiled its Chromebook Pixel. It was an unusually high end device among those running Chrome OS, which had focused primarily on the very lowest end of the market.

Its display was the star attraction: a 12.85-inch touchscreen, offering 2560x1700px resolution which - at the time of its launch - gave it the highest pixel density of any production notebook. But 24 months since its launch, the Pixel is now looking a little long in the tooth.

However, fans of the device will be delighted to hear that a new version is on the way. At its recent "Google TeamWork 2015" event, the company"s Renee Niemi (Director of Android & Chrome, Google for Work) spilled the beans. A YouTube video capturing her comments has since been removed, but OMGChrome.com transcribed her statement before it was pulled:

We do have a new Pixel coming out and it will be coming out soon. We will be selling it but I just have to set your expectations: this is a development platform. This is really a proof of concept. We don’t make very many of these — we really don’t. And […] our developers and our Googlers consume 85% of what we produce. But yes, we do have a new Pixel coming out.”

Just how soon the new Pixel will arrive isn"t yet clear, but it seems likely that the next model will maintain the same high-end focus as its predecessor, especially given Niemi"s description of Pixel as a "proof of concept".
