Last year, Amazon unveiled the Kindle Colorsoft, its first-ever Kindle with a colored display. Although some would argue that it goes against the ethos of what a Kindle stands for, it does add some vibrancy to the device, which is great for viewing stylish book covers and reading graphic novels. Although the hardware did have some teething issues, it seems to be doing well as Amazon has revealed two more Colorsoft models today.
The first is a lower-priced Kindle Colorsoft model with 16GB of storage instead of 32GB. Although it packs many of the same capabilities like faster page turns, a high-contrast display, an adjustable warm light, and the ability to add highlights, there are still notable differences. These include reduced storage, a lack of wireless charging, and the absence of the auto-adjusting front light sensor. That said, Amazon has thrown in three months of Kindle Unlimited to sweeten the pot a bit. Overall, this brings the cost down to $249.99, compared to the $279.99 price tag of the 32GB launch version.
Next, Amazon has announced its first-ever colored Kindle for kids, which isn"t saying a lot since there was only one colored Kindle model prior to today anyway. The Kindle Colorsoft Kids is pretty much identical to the 16GB version described earlier, with the main differences being that it includes a cover for the Kindle, a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, parental controls, and a "two-year worry-free guarantee". Amazon has emphasized the product"s child-friendliness by highlighting the lack of distracting notifications, messages, and apps. The company has also promised to bring more books to the Amazon Kids+ library this summer, with notable additions being the Artemis Fowl series, more Percy Jackson books, and other similar titles.
