Nokia wins patent injunction against HTC on battery saving technology

There"s not much of a connection these days between Nokia and HTC

Nokia and HTC are often competing with each other and occasionally they end up in court. Nokia brought a suite of 40 patents against HTC in Germany, claiming that the Taiwanese company is infringing on Nokia"s intellectual property. At the beginning of the month HTC had a victory with the court dismissing some of Nokia"s claims but now it seems Nokia has the upper hand.

As Florian Muller writes, Nokia was awarded a patent injunction against HTC today in the Mannheim Regional Court, as the judge found HTC to be infringing on Nokia"s patent related to power saving technologies and methods on a mobile device. The patent refers to a power saving technique used by a mobile phone while it is connected to a network; HTC is infringing by using Qualcomm"s chips which employ Nokia"s technique.

What"s more important is that this is a final, not preliminary injunction, and Nokia now has the right to claim damages as well as a recall of infringing devices. HTC was already paying Apple and Microsoft for patents used in the Android operating system and it seems pretty clear that they will soon start paying Nokia for the hardware in their phones.
