Pokémon Company's CEO hints Nintendo NX is a hybrid handheld console

Nintendo’s upcoming NX console is a bit of a mystery. Though leaks and speculation have surrounded the gaming platform since its original announcement, there’s been very little in terms of official information. However, people who might be in the know have seemingly spilled the beans on some of Nintendo’s plans, and the latest to so do is none other than The Pokémon Company’s CEO, Tsunekazu Ishihara.

Previous rumors and leaks had pegged the upcoming NX console to be a sort of hybrid device, capable of classic console gaming but also being a handheld, mobile piece. Somewhat similar to the Wii U controller idea, this would force the console to be light, portable and limited in performance. All of these aspects seem to have been corroborated over time, not only by Nintendo saying they won’t be chasing top-of-the-line specs, but also by Ubisoft’s CEO, who mentioned the NX was trying something different, and was aimed at “casual gamers”.

Now, Ishihara seems to have reiterated these previous statements in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. But the Pokémon Company executive went a step further and seemingly mentioned the hybrid aspect of the gaming device:

The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device. We will make games for the NX.

Of course the wording of that is a bit vague and doesn’t necessarily reveal much. Plus, despite Nintendo owning part of the Pokémon Company the two still operate independently, so it’s not clear if Ishihara is truly in the know here, or going by what’s been reported online. Though given the popularity of the company’s product, and enthusiasm for the upcoming NX console we’re betting on the former.

In either case, Nintendo mentioned the NX will be launching in March of next year. If that’s still the plan, then we won’t have too long to wait before we see what Nintendo has been working on.
