Samsung becomes first to support Matter-enabled cameras for SmartThings

It"s been almost a month since the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced the Matter 1.5 specification for its smart home standard and introduced smart cameras as a new fully supported device category.

Samsung is now adding Matter 1.5-enabled camera support to its smart home platform, SmartThings, becoming the first smart home platform to do so. The update lets you add Matter-enabled smart cameras to your smart home alongside lights, sensors, and other devices.

Matter 1.5 allows device makers to develop smart cameras without needing custom APIs or integrations. It focuses on the functional expansion of the standard by adding the most requested device types and features. The specification improves existing support for closures, including window shades, awnings, drapes, gates, and garage doors.

To name a few features, Matter-enabled cameras on SmartThings can live-stream your home"s indoor and outdoor spaces in real-time, send alerts when movement is detected, show a history of event notifications, enable two-way communication to talk through the camera, and store video recordings in local or cloud storage.

You"ll also be able to create block zones to prevent cameras from reporting motion. These new Matter camera features are supported on the following SmartThings Hubs at launch:

  • Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2
  • Aeotec Smart Home Hub
  • SmartThings Hub 2018
  • ThingsOne Smart Home Hub

In addition, the new camera support will also arrive on the SmartThings Hub 2015 in 2026. Samsung said that the home automation platform now "supports 58 Matter device types through the 1.5 specification," which will cater to its massive consumer base of 425 million users.

The tech giant has partnered with Aqara, Eve, and Xthings, who will launch their Matter-enabled smart cameras in early 2026. The latest update allows new Works With SmartThings-certified partners to bring their cameras to millions of smart home users worldwide, Samsung added.
