Samsung might be readying a Snapdragon 865-powered Galaxy S20 FE for India

Samsung might be readying a version of the Galaxy S20 FE powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 for the Indian market. Unlike the version for the U.S., the device launched in India in October last year with an Exynos 990 SoC, which also did not ship with support for 5G. Now, a listing for a Samsung device bearing model number SM-G781B has passed through the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The model number on the listing and a product information page for the said model differs from the current device sold in the Indian market bearing model number SM-G780, providing credence to the theory that the model is a new version for the market – and in line with the 5G variant of the device sold across the globe. The product page looks to contains placeholder text for the device and hints at the phone possibly sporting dual-sim capabilities, a sort of a pre-requisite in emerging markets like India.

The Exynos 990 chip has seen mixed reception from fans owing to the performance disparity between the South Korean giant’s chips and the Snapdragon version sold in other markets. As a likely measure to address this, the company moved completely to Cortex cores for its Exynos 2100 – which powers the Galaxy S21 series in countries like India.

The addition of a new Snapdragon variant of the S20 FE will be interesting, considering that the device will likely also feature support for 5G. While some carriers in India such as Airtel have touted its readiness to roll out 5G, the necessary regulatory approvals and frequency auctions are still pending. While the 5G-capable Galaxy S20 FE will be future-ready, support for the next-generation network might not be the only selling point.

As for the specs, the S20 FE sports a 6.5-inch display with a FullHD+ resolution and a 32MP front-facing camera in the punch-hole cutout. The rear of the device houses a trio of cameras, two of which are 12MP sensors for wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle units, accompanied by an 8MP telephoto lens. The phone comes with a 4,500mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging. The offering currently retails for ₹49,999 on Samsung’s store.
