The Switch dethrones the DS to be Nintendo's best-selling console, sets sights on PS2

The Nintendo Switch, the hybrid home and handheld console that debuted in 2017, is now the Japanese company"s best-selling console ever. Information about the record being broken landed today from Nintendo"s latest financial results release, revealing that the Nintendo DS has finally been dethroned.

The Switch has been gaining on the DS quite fast in recent times, even though Nintendo released a direct successor as the Switch 2 in June of 2025.

The 2004-released Nintendo DS had been holding strong to its 154.02 million units sold record, but thanks to all the holiday promotions at the end of 2025, the original Nintendo Switch had managed to hit 155.37 million units sold just as it crossed into 2026.

If the current trend continues, the Switch should now have its sights set on overtaking the bestselling console of all time, the PlayStation 2. The Sony console is sitting at over 160 million units sold. Nintendo plans to continue to produce new Switch units and release new games for the aging console as it also continues to support its newest hardware.

Speaking of the Nintendo Switch 2, that hybrid console had also sold well during the holiday period. The six-month-old console has already surpassed the classic Nintendo Wii U (13.56 million units sold) in sales as well. In the last quarter alone, ranging from October to December 2025, it had moved over seven million units. A big jump over the previous quarter"s 4.5 million units sold number. In total, the Nintendo Switch 2 is now sitting at 17.37 million units sold, according to the company"s latest information. By April 1, 2026, which ends the current fiscal year, Nintendo says it expects to hit 19 million sales for the console.

As for top-selling first-party games of the company, its racing games are continuing to be the most popular releases ever. Mario Kart World is leading the pack on the Switch 2 with over 14 million copies being sold, while on the original Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now at over 70 million copies sold.
