It was three years ago that the first rumors of Ubisoft remaking its hugely popular Assassin"s Creed IV: Black Flag began appearing. Following even more reports and leaks over the years, Ubisoft today finally confirmed that the project is indeed real and shared the first piece of art from it, seen above.
The confirmation landed from the company"s franchise update blog post on the Assassin"s Creed franchise. It looks like the remake will sport the name Assassin"s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, dropping the IV from its name. Ubisoft did not give any hints regarding a release window.
"Speculation around Assassin"s Creed is not new, but it"s worth repeating: "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted." Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails," said Ubisoft regarding the Black Flag remake rumors. "Keep your spyglass on the horizon."
If recent rumors are accurate, the remake is set to take a more RPG route, like recent Assassin"s Creed games. This will mean skill trees, inventory systems, levels for enemies, and stats for any loot players earn. It is also said to be adding fresh content that was cut from the original release, while all modern-day gameplay sections are reportedly being cut.
As for other franchise updates, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is almost finished with its post-launch content as it nears its first birthday, but there will still be "a few surprises" left, according to the company.
Codename Hexe received another mention here, which is to be the next mainline entry into the series.
"Expect a unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history," said Ubisoft. "We are taking the time to deliver on its ambitious vision, which means we’ll be quiet for a little longer, but we love seeing all the enthusiasm happening on our channels and can’t wait to unveil more when the time is right."
The online multiplayer-focused Assassin"s Creed game, codenamed Invictus, was namedropped alongside the mobile entry Assassin"s Creed Jade, as upcoming releases. Ubisoft also teased that cooperative play is coming back to the franchise, though in what way it did not elaborate. At the same time, the 2014-released Assassin"s Creed Unity is getting a 60 FPS update on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 tomorrow, March 5.
