Laptop no longer works on battery

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I opened up my Sony Vaio Fit/Multiflip 15 to change the hard drive to SSD and clean installed Windows 10 - that all works great.

But now it won't run off battery power only - I have to have it plugged into mains.

Anyone have an ideas on what I've done?? Or what troubleshooting steps I can take?

Other info:

- Was working with battery only just fine before I opened it up

- Shows charge of 71%

- Battery doesn't appear to be charging up further even though Windows says plugged in and charging (and orange light comes on under laptop suggesting it's charging)

I feel like I must have touched something but I really can't see what! And it's weird that Windows still detects a battery is there with 71% charge...!

Any help welcome.

What OS was on the laptop prior to the HDD->SSD upgrade?

It's possible you are missing some Sony specific drivers/software that isn't provided as part of Windows.

Looking at this thread ...

Someone posted the following (in answering a similar question).

Quote

Ensure that the VAIO is turned off. (Nice easy start considering the problem!)

Unplug the AC adaptor from the VAIO.

Locate the battery off button on the VAIO bottom and press it using thin paper clip. (small hole on the bottom, next to the HDMI port)

Wait for a few minutes ( 2-5 )

Plug in the AC Adaptor.

Press the Assist button, if it turns ON, please move to the next step

Press F2 to access the BIOS.

Press F3 or F9 to followed by Enter to reset the BIOS to the default settings.

Press F4 or F10 to save and restart.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

If @Jim K's suggestion didn't work, I would suggest very carefully disassembling and reassembling the unit, taking care to check that the battery is connected properly.

@Jim K thank you so much! That did it! Apologies, clearly didn't search properly before posting.

The battery reset hole is so tiny I never knew it was there.

Laptop given a new lease of life following SSD upgrade - happy success! ?
