Internal connection between two PCs seems to max at 50 MB/s

PC (wired)

• On-board Realtek RTL8111H Gigabit NIC (2014 model)
• Wired directly to a BT Smart Hub 1 802.11ac wireless router
• Windows Settings shows a link speed of 1000/1000 Mbps

 

Server (wireless)

• Addon XWP3000R 802.11ax wireless NIC
• Latest Intel AX200 drivers (v22.40.0, dated March 2021)

• Wirelessly connected to the BT Smart Hub 1 wireless router

• Windows Settings shows a link speed of 866/866 Mbps
• Appears to have full wireless signal strength

 

When I transfer files from the PC to the server, the speed varies between roughly 30 MB/s and 70 MB/s (very variable, even during the same transfer).

 

When I transfer files from the server to the PC, I get a constant 47 MB/s transfer speed. I was expecting (hoping?) for around 120 MB/s (Gigabit).

 

Any ideas?

You are getting what I would expect over WiFi.

Yeah, you are limited by Wi-Fi..

 

Always do wired unless you can't.

Even wired gig wouldn't give you that.. More like 113 to maybe 115.. 

 

Keep in mind there is overhead..  Even gig is more like low to mid 900's - 940ish I would say it best you could possible see..  Just like you don't see 100, or even 10..

 

Just some advice, would never run a "server" wireless.. Not like servers move about much

 

This is good advice "Always do wired unless you can't"..  Unless the device is mobile, if it has a wired interface, you should do everything you can to wire it..

While that is a good PHY connection, real world is not close to that.. Best say 60% of that - normally more in the 50% range.. So lets call it 400ish - so 400/8 = 50MBps.. So yeah if your seeing 50ish over wireless 867 PHY.. that is good performance and expecting any more than that is pretty much dreaming..

 

This is pretty much pegging a 1gig connection

 

 

That is s 2.something gig file.. pulling from my nas to my pc over 1gig wired..   You can see its pretty flat line at like 113MBps

 

Now here is the same file from the same nas to the same PC via 2.5gig connection.. So clearly the HDD and the SSD involved where not a bottle neck limiting it to 113..

 

I see upwards of 280MBps via this connection.. Quite possible someone streaming something off plex at the moment..

 

Oh yeah - 3 people streaming, movies they watching could be off the same volume I was pulling the test file from, etc..

 

 

But yeah gig is going to be about 113MB.. If your seeing over 100MB I would see your normal..  Pretty much any sort of somewhat recent hardware should be able to do 100MBps over gig.. But 120.. No not really possible..
