For some months I have been battling with some smaller applications which won't run on my PC as they give the following error:

Runtime Error 429

ActiveX component can't create object

To my dismay, I have just discovered Autopatcher and it too gives this error.

I have ready every google/forum post I can find on this subject and done "regsvr32" on many DLL and OCX files but it hasn't helped.

I know that the solution is to re-install XP, but this is not an option.

Does anyone have ANY idea how I can fix this once and for all?

My fingers are crossed that someone can help

Don't Panic!

Despite the mysterious appearance of this error message, you should find it pretty easy to solve. The error message itself can occur for one of four reasons (listed in order of likeliness):

You do not have a required TLB or ActiveX DLL/OCX file.

A TLB or ActiveX DLL/OCX needed by the project is present but not registered on your system.

The VB runtimes are an earlier version than the one you need to run the project.

A required TLB or ActiveX DLL/OCX file is corrupt.

So, any suggestion as to how to fix it?

In the case of Autopatcher, I noticed in the install\bin directory that it uses:

COMCTL32.DLL

MSCOMCTL.DLL

I checked both of these and found I had the exact same versions in my system32 directory.. But using REGSVR32 I unregistered and registered them and the result was the same.

I always hoped that my problem was down to the VB Runtimes and hunted down the latestet versions before... But that didn't.

So, the only possiblity is a missing/corrupted DLL/OCX!!

But how I track that down is beyond me!!!

ANYONE?? Please help me???

Jo

Hi Jo, I hope this helps. I found this post yesterday while I was searching for a solution to the same problem. I tried REGSVR32 many .dll files but the one that worked for me was REGSVR32 SCRRUN.DLL, which for XP users can be found in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory.

If it works I would appreciate you signing my Guest Book and let everyone know what a great guy I am

note, though I got the same error it wasn't from using autopatcher, still it won't hurt to try.

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! I owe you a beer or something..

This is been bugging me for months.. Not just for Autopatcher, but loads of little utils which I am trying to run and all give me the same error.

I have tried many suggestions before, so whilst yours gave me with hope I expected to end up disappointed (again).

BUT.. To my surprise and delight, It worked.. The error is gone.. Not only can I now use AutoPatcher, but also the other little utils too.

A HUGE thanks for your help with this.. I am so grateful!!

Many thanks

Jon

to resolve this situation:

type in:

scrrun.dll

under google and find a download for the file.

once it has been downloaded, place the file in the

following directory:

c:\windows\system32

now goto the start menu and the run command

and type in:

regsvr32 scrrun.dll

this will register the .dll file and all will work now.

below is a .zip of the required .dll file for convenience.

scrrun.zip
