after installing a new media player ( http://www.splayer.org/index.en.html ) i've got the problem, that i only get a thumbnail preview for .mp4 files. it started after i changed the filetype associations. i uninstalled the player, resetted the filetype associations, resetted the thumbnail cache, dis- and enabled the thumbnail previews, reinstalled my codecs and set wmp as systemstandard, but nothing helps.

i can see, when i open a folder after i deleted the cache, that windows will only generate the thumbnails for mp4 files, the progressbar in the adressbar is done once the mp4 have a thumbnail.

is there anything i can do to reset this to the normal behaviour?

I would try a restore point before you installed the new media player.

yeah, also tried that, last restore point i can choose is where i reinstall the codecs after installing the player. :(

I would avoid software that messes such things up.

if i would have known it, i wouldn't have tried it. why didn't you warn me? :p

paste that into a .reg file and execute it, works for me.

imo you should uninstall splayer, then install k lite mega codec pack + qt lite - works for me perfectly, for 2 years.

Ditto this, the K Lite Codec Pack not only lets me play pretty much everything under the sun, but fills in most of the gaps in thumbnail generation too. Just need to make sure to enable them during the installation. Works beautifully here, using the included Media Player Classic for videos, and WinAmp for audio.

One thing I did notice with 7 though is that some thumbnail generation was "broken" if you uninstall Windows Media Player, even if it's not assigned to anything via associations, most notably a couple video types, FLV's included. (I'm not a fan of WMP at all.) What worked for me was just leaving WMP installed, going under Default Programs, and un-checking "Enable access to this program." WMP is gone as far as I'm concerned, but thumbnail generation still works.

If you're still missing some associations after running the above reg file (I think that's the same one I found online after SPlayer screwed them up here too) you can get more fixes on
