Learning Delphi

Question

Right, about to start learning delphi in college but of course their current provisions are considerably less than adequate. So, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good starter book and compiler, erm... just everything to get us started really. :huh:

Cheers. :ninja:

Any other information about starting delphi would also be very much appreciated. :happy:

Well if you want to look into the future or just be up to date, try Delphi 7 they're implementing .NET soon.

For for beginners version 5 and 6 are very good. Delphi is not hard and it's OO with RAD, waaaay better than VB6. There are some books that can help you, some I have on .pdf. PM me for them

hope this helps

OO = Object Oriented

RAD = ?

first off, delphi is not the programming language. thats object pascal.

if you want to make native win32 apps then get delphi 7 from http://www.borland.co.uk or if you want to make .net then get delphi 8

i learnt delphi with the book "delphi made simple" it basicly takes you through making a payroll thing. ill be happy to give it to you (but you pay for postage) just pm me.

[edit] noticed ure in uk, changed borland site to uk one :p [/edit]

What exactly am I downloading if I download "Delphi 7"? (which is the version I would get) Is there a compiler on there? for free or cheap?

Download the Personal edition of Delphi. It's a full visual development environment. You're free to use it and distribute freeware programs.

So delphi personal edition is 100% free to download and use?

Architecht is the COMMERCIAL version? Personal is the "lite" version?

Yep. Even with the "lite" version, you can write good client apps. It's great for learning.

[edit]

It looks like Borland has removed the download for Delphi 7 Personal, at least on the US site... bummer.

Borland isn't allowing download anymore. You can get a key for free from Borland, though. Use your favorite p2p to find Delphi 7 Personal. it's only 53MB. I found it on the mule lickety-split. still, $100 ain't bad for having the media and manuals. It's $97 on programmersparadise.com.

Oh. That's kind of a bummer. But I appreciate you letting me know. Thanks. (Y)

Arcitect is the most expensive comerchal one, there are others.

Wow, a lot of that went *right* over my head :blush:

I just need to know a good, cheap Delphi 7 Compiler. I downloaded a 30 day architect trial, that's not the roght thing to do?

And I just read about downloading a key of the borland site and then getting the actual program from a p2p network. But then I heard mention of $100, :blink: Are the wtwo related? they charging $100 for the key? Or was that a separate matter altogether? :huh:

Cheers (Y) :)

Delphi Personal is $99 w/ physical media. It used to be that you could just download an archive of it. They've discontinued that. It has everything you need to get started with Delphi. If you are a student, you can get the Enterprise edition of Delphi for around the same price as the Personal edition. You can download the license key for the Personal edition. They're assuming you have the CD or the original archive.

So the Personal edition has all the tools/routines you need, including dialog box components, directory trees, tabbed interface construction, database attachments, the whole deal?

It has all of that, minus many of the database components.

I believe it has some very simple database controls but I can't quite remember as I haven't used the Personal version for a long time.
