goden99
To many a long story short. My explorer.exe keeps crashing every 5-10 seconds when i push close it loads up. i want to try to reinstall internet explorer. I removed it from add and remove programs. and did a tried to reinstall ie6 but i get this error. if i just check it and let it install error still there. so it tried to Follow these steps for repairing Internet Explorer 6: 1. Click on the Start button and then click on the Run option. 2. In the Open field type regedit and press the OK button. 3. Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} 4. Under that key you will see a entry named IsInstalled. Right click on that entry and left click on Modify. 5. Change the Value from 1 to 0. 6. Exit regedit. from support.microsoft.com and rebooted but it still thinks i have ie6 installed so i tried sfc /scannow didn't help and the ie.inf install does not find ie6setup.dll and lots of errors happen after that. Anyway to force ie6 install
HaTeTaTeLLyA
If you have System Restore turned on, you can try that. If that doesn't work, have you also tried to re-install SP2? I think this was the Microsoft article you were referring to.
ZappBrannigan
Somebody correct me if im wrong, but if the prob is (was) with explorer.exe then its the file manager/shell, not internet explorer A lil late I know seeing as you've already uninstalled ie!
SergeantNoob
You have to reinstall SP2. There is no other way to reinstall IE.
ozgeek
The latest version of IE is already shipped with XP. You can't install a new version over it other than reinstall Windows or SP2. EXPLORER.EXE is not Internet Explorer. It's the file that manages what you see in Windows (the windows, dialog boxes, start button and menu, taskbar, anything that you interact in Windows is managed by EXPLORER.EXE. When you start IE, you can see in the Task Manager that IE is IEXPLORE.EXE.
goden99
well its to late now i have two problems...lol The windows XP I have is already slipstreamed sp2... I can try to find the origional windows xp pro that came with my dell but its not even sp1. Here is the thing explorer keeps crashing and Iexplorer is also gone. I need to fix both these problems I can not format and reinstall because I have many programs installed for school that i paid for and i had to call and it generates a key and its a one time use i've tried installing it on my brothers laptop the thing changes and does not accept the it. so i'd rather leave that as a last resort. What I've one is repair, failed, autopatcher jan full and autopatcher jun full. update windows. uninstall and reinstall ie from add and remove programs in control panel. I've ran the sfc /scannow and repaired windows again nothing has fixed the problem I still have the sameee problem. But here is the weird thing. I can run iexplorer and change the address bar to control panel, desktop, virtually anything and it works like exporer. only thing thats anoying is no start button, no clock, no system tray and can';t see whats running with out tabbing or alt control delete (task manager) What do you guys recommend i do? ntbtlog.zip Edited July 16, 2005 by goden99

SergeantNoob
:D I knew it wasn't a system file and search on Google showed your post in an another forum site, so it drew up a red flag. Glad you got it fixed. I suggest trying jv16 Power Tools for registry cleaning but don't delete everything it spits out. P.S. It's been from past experience that spyware produce randomly named malicious files and most antispyware programs really don't detect them.
amrinders87
Try this. Go to C:\Windows\Inf folder and then right click the file ie.inf and choose Install. That will re-copy files needed by IE from your windows disk. You may need a slisptreamed disk of xp that contains SP 2.
