- You can only post about levels you found or pimping your own. ALL other discussions needs to be the official one ( https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=649430 ). This thread is all about the levels!

- The selection of levels featured in this opening post are with ~1000 plays or less for the most part. It's about giving exposure to those great levels that nobody plays. You however can post about any level you want.

- When you post the quality levels you found or that you made in the thread, try to respect the format: (still, don't shy away from posting if you can't make fonts like that)

Platformer Pandemonium! / Korghano

A level made in the beta by Chris_C I believe, and remains one of my favourites. Classic old school platforming and a solid art style cemented this as a great level back then, and it still is now. Its criminally underplayed, and someone even stole and republished it (so you know its good)! Ranger X had a little trouble finding it, so this one might be caught in server limbo, but I know I can still play it and recommend it! Look for Korghano's version, not the thieved one. He deserves your hearts so he will make a sequel!

The Domain / DrPacifist

This level really blew me away. Its a must play if only for the ingenious contraptions and platforming construct solutions! The aesthetic is wonderful with a aztec temple theme, but you will say 'wow' at the final rotating room puzzle. Pretty hardcore level, but recommended!

k04x29.png

Puzzlin Platformer / Miguel_Gordo

Another great level for looking at how to approach simple platform mechanics! The visuals are a bit simplistic, but the level design is more than there. This one is certainly for hardcore platformers only, with a very tricky Moving Spike Column gauntlet. Enjoy the challenge.

Little Big Satan / Dread9

A great themed level, hopefully not up for moderation for featuring everyone's favourite fallen angel, this is a very solid adventure level with an interesting use of "Secret Stickers" that denote a hidden area or mechanism in the area for more points and object prizes. A very solid boss encounter rounds out this fiery visually adept level.

Pixel Animation Demo 1/Clipper_US (aided by Modulos)

Using a full fledged LED screen, Modulos and I have created a method that is suitable for animation. The pic below only shows one frame...the full walk animation is in there. This is just the first test there will be more.

Some really worthwhile reads if you're looking to create

The Platformer Primer

Little Big Planet will turn everyone into a platform game designer - however, it might not make them a good game designer.

So here is a primer on platform games I've put together for anyone who wants to make their game a little better or, more importantly, a little fairer. Enjoy!

How to create the greatest Boss Battle (and why not to do it!)

Here is my 2008 GDC talk (sans humorous animations) - "How to create the greatest Boss Battle (and why not to do it!) This will make more sense with the audio from the talk - which will presumably be posted at gdcradio. I'll post a direct link when and if it shows up.

Boss Design - http://mrbossdesign.blogspot.com/2008/02/h...battle-and.html

I'll add more levels to go through later as well.

K, so published my own. Not much to it, not really all that challenging, but it takes some patience. Jist is, you try to get into a club, the bouncer ain't havin' it, so you have to ride up to the roof, and slide down in. Score bubbles, pullies, club lighting, and groupies all collide. It's called "In Da Club".

Lots of pullies.

Well, lots of very long pullies.

Nothing phallic, tho.

Even a random hidden shout to neowin ;)

Kinda wish we could use imported music, but that would conflict with copyrights n'at. :(

    • Linux 7.1 arrives with an NTFS overhaul and major hardware performance boosts by Paul Hill The founder of the Linux kernel has just announced the availability of Linux 7.1. This is a stable version of the kernel that will now be tested by various Linux distributions before it is shipped to users through update managers. Some users, like those on Debian, for example, might not get it for a long time, if at all, while Fedora users can expect it in the near future. With Linux 7.1 out on time, the merge window for Linux 7.2 is now open, giving contributors the opportunity to send in major new features that have been waiting for the last two months. Torvalds warned that he is currently travelling and will be in another timezone, so timing for the merge window may be irregular due to timezone differences and limited internet access. Torvalds said that he has already fetched early pull requests to allow him to do some offline work, but the travel could still cause disruption. Right now, he is not planning to extend the release, but did consider it. He said he might later regret not extending, though. In terms of this last week of development for Linux 7.1, Torvalds said there were no major or alarming changes. This week consisted mostly of smaller driver updates to GPU, networking, and sound, networking fixes, trace tooling fixes, and misc minor fixes. The shortlog this week lists fixes for driver bugs, memory leaks, I/O and USB fixes, networking and RDMA fixes, DRM/graphics fixes, and tooling and verification improvements. Specific fixes include USB series heap-overflow and buffer overflow fixes, and multiple use-after-free, memory-leak, and refcount corrections across subsystems such as i2c, zram, gpio, and net. There are fixes for graphics drivers, including amdgpu, i915, and virtio, as well as hypervisor and virtualization tweaks affecting mshv, vmbus, and hyperv. According to Phoronix, anyone running Linux 7.1 should look out for the new NTFS driver, Intel FRED for improved performance on Panther Lake and future CPUs, faster graphics with Intel Arc Battlemage, and improvements for older AMD Radeon GPUs. If you are running Linux on your computer and everything is fine, then you don’t need to worry about updating to Linux 7.1 as a priority; just wait for it to be pushed to you. If you have tried Linux on hardware but it didn’t work properly, trying again with a distro that uses Linux 7.1 could cause Linux to work on your machine, thanks to the new hardware support.
