Rudy
If you want to install an older version (like XP) you need to boot from the CD (this is done outside of Windows) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1001252-installing-older-versions-of-windows-through-newer-versions/#findComment-594027806 Share on other sites
Fraud OS 11
If your computer can boot from USB, use WinToFlash to put XP setup on a USB flash drive. It will do the job of rewriting txtsetup.sif to support installing from USB. Wakers
I never really understood this - Particularly with Win7. Say your installation of Win7 becomes corrupted and startup repair cannot fix the problem. You can log into Windows but several services are not functioning correctly. You can pop in the Win7 DVD, do an 'upgrade' install that will preserve existing files but replace the Windows installation. Because your machine (hopefully) has SP1 installed, the installation would fail. It would make it easier sometimes to just be able to overwrite with an older version. I recently encountered the above scenario on a colleagues computer - he had not backed anything up (ha ha) and so we couldn't reformat. I had to fix about 20 services via registry hacks and it took me hours, and I'm not sure if the result is stable yet. The install would have taken about 20 minutes.
