Chelsea to appoint Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas

Recommended Posts

Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas looks set to join Chelsea following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in May.

The 33-year-old Villas-Boas guided Porto to the Europa League title last season.

The Portuguese has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave Porto should another club offer ?13.2m for his services.

In a statement, Porto said they had yet to receive an offer that activated the release clause.

Porto also clinched a domestic double under Villas-Boas last season, winning the league and the league cup.

Guus Hiddink has also been linked with a return to Chelsea, where he won the FA Cup as a caretaker manager in 2009.

Villas-Boas, who speaks fluent English, was a scout for Mourinho at both Chelsea and at Inter Milan.

He also worked with Bobby Robson during the former England manager's spell in charge of Porto.

Porto ended the past season unbeaten in the domestic championship with 27 wins in 30 matches, becoming only the second Portuguese club to finish a league season unbeaten, after Benfica in 1972-73.

Nothing in the BBC's story suggests that Chelsea will appoint him as their manager. Yes, he was one of Mourinho's staff at Chelski, but that's it. The only other angle is that the release clause is 15m euros and the Blues are the only top club in search of a manager who are not shy of forking over large wads of cash. As things stand, it's pure speculation.

well only copying what BBC said....

anyway the article was shorter when I copied it...now its longer with a Chelski statement

A Chelsea statement said: "We hope to be able to make an announcement regarding the new manager in the next few days or so, but until then we will not be commenting further on the speculation surrounding that appointment."

if it happens it would be good appointment

BBC are being a bit tabloid-esque there, leading the reader to believe it's a done deal with nothing but speculation. Whether it will be a good appointment or not remains to be seen, pending his signature of course. There aren't many top level managers walking about cap in hand at the moment

Every single soccer site has been posting different speculation stories mainly on sanchez, neymar, villas-boa, fabregas, modric, rossi and the list goes on. Expect more of the same till the end of July...

There is posting speculation and making it obvious that it is nothing but a rumour (as Neowin does now) and there's posting something as if the ink barely dried on the contract paper.

Anyhow, the latest rumour is now that Andre Villas-Boas paid that 15m euros himself and has quit Porto. I hope he gets his money back at Chelski if Roman does decide to appoint him.

Don't get me wrong I do agree with you. I find transfer speculation has always been like this so it is amusing where as neowin has just dropped it standard for some reason or another.

Just to sort these news: a source within the club told Lusa that Villas-Boas tendered his resignation via fax a couple of hours ago. There was no official statement from the club to CMVM (Portuguese Securities Market Commission) or any news agency.

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on LinuxΒ https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
