I don't think the Thread Maker minds to give out his Real Name, but he just prefers to use his beloved online identity.

Well in that case he should have formulated the poll differently, indicating his discontent with having to use something other than his nickname as opposed to the discontent with having to use a real name.

Probably not the social network for you then. It's all about the real you on these sites.

You could use your real name then put a blurb on you profile page, also known as DarkFib3r.

This. They give the option to put something under your real name, where I put Official Artificial for example you can put Darkfib3r

Why should it be restricted to friends from real life? I have made many, many friends on-line that I have never met in person. I still regard them as "real" friends. Some are better friends than people I have actually met.

Why, you ask? Because there's BIG money in getting all the correct info the first time. Very soon the US govt. is going to start the "Online Identity" ****. This is going to make it very easy for ****ing corporations like Google and Facebook to compile the information people give them with the "Online Identity" for all intents and purposes, including reputation, background checks for law enforcement, selling you things, personally advertising to you, etc. Things are going to be very very easy for the govt. and the corporations, and very very difficult for individuals to get out of this mess.

Google and Facebook will force you to use your real names because it benefits them more than it benefits you.

Nobody seems to be addressing the poll question (apart from SMELTN), "Should we be forced to use are real names"

If so, why? Baring in mind that there is nothing to stop you using a fake name.

Or should we be allowed the freedom to use the names we have used for years, and that many people only know us by.

No, we should not be forced to use real names. It's the ****ing Internet. Not real life. People can communicate with each other regardless of their real names on the Internet. It's what we have been doing for all these years on IM, Telephone, etc. WTF is the need to put real names when your friends already know your Internet names or nicknames? It's all for helping make things easier for Google to make money.

If it matters that much to you, legally change your name and send them a copy of the documentation ;)

Wow! That's a whole new level of stupidity.

They want to know your Official nick names too? Unbelievable.

Well, social networks are, apart from creating ad-money, supposed to be personal. Find your old friends, stay in touch with the ones that move away...

Does anyone remember MySpace? It was a pain in the ass to find someone because his/her name probably was something like "xXhardcorekittiehcat9892Xx".

I am glad that people sign up with their real names, so I can just go to FB and look for that old friend I have not seen for ages. You can decide, how much information you want to be instantly visible about you so... No problem here.

But if you fire off that ad-argument, don't use it. Simple as that. It's a free service provided, either in Googles or Zuckerbergs backyard, so play by it's rules or don't, noone forces you.

I think that yea, we should be forced to use real names. "real", that is. Call yourself John Doe or Marry Shoelace but please, let's not get the MySpace-times back.

Maybe they don't want to be found. Would you like your [typical] girlfriend to see you talking with another chick you like on your "only" ID?

The problem with forcing Real Names is that you are giving up your choice.

It's just myopic to just talk about ads. There's lots of money to be made by selling information. Getting cash from the govt. for running a database like that of a Social Network that penetrates the lives of the people all over the world is ****ing HUGE. No govt. has been able to do this so far. The corporations' mouths must be watering just imagining all that free future cash flow.

The basic problem that these companies faced before Facebook was that nobody was giving them information. Now, because Google and Facebook have got through to the sheeple and have made the sheeple believe that they are the trustworthy best friends, to whom you can tell anything, sheeple gladly give them everything they need just because their acquaintances have invited them to join it and to communicate using the new tools.

If they tell you to put your real name in, you better do it or they'll cut you off from your friends. "If you take info from the website I run, I'll see you in court. Didn't you read the memo?" Ha! When was the last time you wished you never gave up control of a situation to someone else?

Which is why I dont use facebook, if they find your profile, they can see your photos even if theyre not your friend. With googles "circles" feature, you can limit what people can see, and make it so anyone who isn't in a circle cant see anything from your profile except your name and location.

This feature is the only reason I am back using Social Networking.

Yeah its not like facebook has this thing called groups that does the same thing as circles...

Just like in real life, if some old friend finds you and you no longer want to associate with them, you don't. You can't stop someone from trying to find you but you can just ignore them when they do. Then again they can only see what you publish publically. So once again, if you don't want someone to see your balls in public, don't show them in public then!

Facebook actually has come a long way in the past two years in terms of stepping up privacy features and giving you control over exactly what each person can see, and I am sure that Google is following Facebook at least to some extent to avoid any backlash over lax control.

Circles is basically the equivalent of the lists feature in facebook. Spend some time organizing your contacts and then assign how much content they can view. You can even make your profile completely unsearchable by any search engine, leaving the only way to find you is to give your profile url to them.

Maybe they don't want to be found. Would you like your [typical] girlfriend to see you talking with another chick you like on your "only" ID?

You can hide your profile so that others can't look you up... How would your girlfriend know that you're talking to another girl unless you allow her access to your account or computer?

    • After enabling it in about:config, customize, density, compact; the toolbar/address bar gets smaller vertically. I enabled Nova, I notice the tab bar/title bar is a bit larger vertically now? Everything always becomes a waste of space.
