Installing Clean OSX Lion from a DVD or USB stick

Recommended Posts

It's asking me to pay for them but I have found that on Apple forums.

If you reinstall Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion installed, on an erased or replaced hard drive, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.

After installation, start from Lion.

  1. Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
  2. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  3. Click Purchases.
  4. If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
  5. You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to compete installation of your applications.

That should do the trick!

Thanks

I had the three-beep of death for the longest time as I tried to downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard. Apparently Apple has hardcoded that error so that you can't downgrade. I ended up reinstalling Lion. The only other option is upgrading to Mountain Lion.

I doubt this, I had no trouble booting into Lion and installing Snow Leopard.

Thanks for this guide just going to create my own copy of Mountain Lion now and this is really helpful!

GUID Partition Table and Mac OS Extended

I saw some guide on the internet use MS-DOS?? I thought that was strange, will be using mac os extended and guid partition table anyway.

The disk utility won't work for me, I press erase option and it does nothing on the restore, I also formatted the USB drive completely, tried copying the .dmg file out of the application to the desktop. When I press Restore then Erase it does nothing!! :( Looks like I'll give that tool a try ^

edit: Actually turns out I set the destination as the install dmg file and the source the usb haha

Any Windows filesystem will corrupt OS X system files and apps because it doesn't support all characters.

Not sure if it's been mentionedin here, but there is a good tool for making a bootable Lion or Mountain Lion CD or USB stick...

Go here http://blog.gete.net...n-diskmaker-us/

It works great!

Yeah I've used that, really good :)

Anyone know if I got the DMG file on my PC how to burn it on a disc? I think I have been stupid when installing my new HDD.

Actually, if you install TransMac, you can burn the DVD on any Windows PC (that is, after all, what TransMac is for - accessing normally-incompatible Mac file formats on Windows PCs).

In the 1,5 years since I posted above reply I've found a solution and already forgot it again. Thanks anyway for the suggestion!

My first exposure to TransMac goes back to my early days of Mac emulation - specifically, Basilisk II; with MacOS 7.5.x or even OS 8 (the first version of MacOS to support DHCP).  Because I also support real Macs (of both the PPC and Intel sorts), TransMac is still a nice utility to have at the ready.

Yes - works for Lion and later.  (In fact, it works for anything you purchase via the App Stores or iTunes - even those items with a price of $0.00.)

    • Thanks, Sony and Nintendo, you effectively killed platform-agnostic gaming. Long gone are the days when you could wish to play a specific game on whatever platform you were. Now, you have to buy the hardware just to play that single game. What, you're only interested in THAT game and nothing more? Bad luck, suck it and buy our console.
    • The AI data centers need it more than us so...let them gobble it all up at that price!
    • "CRAZIER than ever!" Crazy Taxi: World Tour is officially coming soon by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Sega announced it is working on bringing back some of its classic franchises in 2023, and while it has taken some time, the company finally gave fans a look at one of these new projects at the Xbox Games Showcase today, which turned out to be a brand-new Crazy Taxi entry. Watch the debut trailer above, which has snippets of gameplay in between the cinematic bits while blasting a track from The Offspring. Dubbed Crazy Taxi World Tour, this installment is aptly being described as being "CRAZIER than ever!" The director behind the original, Kenji Kanno, is helming this new entry as well, which will come with access to five new cities to drive in, competitive multiplayer modes, a vehicle customization system, and more. Axel is returning as a protagonist as well, but this time a mystery driver is offering him the opportunity to take his adventures to the streets in other countries. This will involve Axel chasing down masked villains that have somehow stolen his taxi, which means even more extreme missions and challenges to overcome. "From transporting passengers at top speed to tackling unique side missions and odd jobs across dynamic maps, there are countless ways to drive crazy and rake in big money," says Sega about this new installment after over 20 years. "Perform outrageous drifts, catch insane air, and drive at crazy speeds across five different cities as you work to deliver passengers and complete a variety of missions and challenges." The studio has even confirmed an in-game Arcade Mode that players will be able to access containing the original games for plenty of nostalgic action. Crazy Taxi: World Tour is currently slated to release sometime in 2027 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
    • This and Crazy Taxi are the two games that interested me the most from this showcase.
