Trying to save SHSH blobs for iPhone/iPad 4.3.3 using TinyUmbrella

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm not at this moment interested in Jailbreaking my iPad 2. However, I would like to keep the possibility open. Currently, v 4.3.3 of iOS is required to Jailbreak an iPad 2.

Fired up TinyUmbrella to see if I can save my v 4.3.3 SHSH blobs of my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. TinyUmbrella says that it can only save iPhone4 4.3.4 and 5.0b2 SHSH blobs because "APPLE is NOT signing iPhone 4.3.3 (8J2) SHSH requests anymore. All you can do now is select CYDIA and hope that CYDIA has your SHSH saved."

I know that CYDIA doesn't have my SHSH saved because I have not jailbroken my device. If I do jailbreak, will CYDIA be able to save 4.3.3 for me, or am I screwed because I waited too long and Apple is no longer signing for 4.3.3?

Thanks for your input!

If Apple has indeed stopped signing the SHSH blobs for the iPad 2 FW4.3.3 then you might be stuck between a rock and a hard place.

My best advice would be to jailbreak it @ jailbreakme to allow the installation of Cydia and hope that it'll save the SHSH blob information within the app.

You probably wont know for a few days though whether it has managed to save the information due to the time it takes to show through Cydia.

Hmm... I may go the Jailbreak route and cross my fingers. Definitely holding off on 4.3.4 installation. My only interest right now with Jailbreaking is to side load apps I'm working on. Not particularly interested in paying Apple $99 to load my own software on my devices just to tinker with.

Can someone give me some insight into this tinyumbrella thing. I jailbroke my ipad 2 the day jailbreakme.com went live with it, i have no idea if cydia stores the shsh or what an shsh blog even is for that matter. But i plugged it into tinyumbrella the other day and it hit hackup shsh and it made an shsh folder, so am i good to do a restore to 4.3.3? How do i even go about doing a restore with tinyumbrella, and how can i make sure that i'm ok to be able to do a successful restore back to 4.3.3?

I'm loving having it jailbroken, the cydia extensions you can download are pretty amazing, boggles my mind why apple doesn't take a hint from these people and add some of these things to IOS.

Hi Bubbabyte -

I'm not in a good position for giving you step-by-step directions, but I can describe the "gist" of what is going on with TinyUmbrella, Cydia, and SHSH blobs.

SHSH blobs/authentication keys are issued by Apple for each iOS version and have to match your device ID. Apple's process for installing iOS on your device is as follows:

1. Download the OS via iTunes

2. Initiate installation on iOS device

3. iTunes sends your iOS device ID to Apple's authentication server

4. The authentication server sends back an SHSH key that tells your device "this is authentic Apple software and is OK to install" (in essence).

5. iOS installs on the device.

When you Jailbreak your device for the first time, you are given an option in Cydia to give the app permission to download the SHSH keys from Apple for you device and have them stored on the Cydia server in case you ever want to roll back your installation. If you jailbroke your device right when the jailbreak was available and gave the Cydia app permission to store your keys for you, then chances are they are on file. If you open Cydia, I think near the top it states what SHSH keys are on file for whatever iOS version numbers.

TinyUmbrella is a stand alone application that essentially does the same thing, but the SHSH keys are on your computer and not some remote server (so you have to take care and back them up). TinyUmbrella can query Apple's server and download signed SHSH keys that you can use later if you need to install and older version of iOS that Apple is no longer providing keys for. One advantage to using TinyUmbrella is that it does not require your device to be Jailbroken. It is a good tool to use, because sometimes Apple's iOS updates can present bugs that you would rather not have and rather just be on an older version of the OS.

Because I've been lazy, 4.3.4 came out and therefore TinyUmbrella can not access my 4.3.3 keys that I would need to downgrade :(. I'm going to try Cydia (via a Jailbreak), but I'm not very confident since it is essentially the same process that TinyUmbrella invokes. So I'm basically stuck on 4.3.3 on my iPad 2 at the moment. Don't want to lose access to the Jailbreak if I need it, but don't really want to Jailbreak right now. If I had saved my keys, I could upgrade to 4.3.4 or whatever is the latest version and always backtrack to 4.3.3 where a jailbreak for iPad 2 exists.

In the log of TinyUmbrella it will tell you what keys it has stored for the connect device. Browse around the log for clues, and read the FAQ on the TinyUmbrella web site for more help.

The process of restoring to an older iOS version is similar to Apple's process for the latest iOS version. The difference is you have to trick iTunes to talk to either TinyUmbrella or Cydia's web server while thinking it is talking to Apple. So when the older version of iOS is installing, your device sees an SHSH that is stored in TinyUmbrella or Cydia, thinks it is from Apple, and that is all it needs to convince itself that Apple says it is "ok" to install this version of iOS. For TinyUmbrella you have to start the TSS Server (I think). For Cydia, you need to modify a host file so that your DNS resolution of Apple's server points to Cydia's server instead (many how-tos for this depending on your desktop OS).

your only option, since you are on 4.3.3, is jailbreakme.com, you won't be able save the SHSH however, because Apple has stopped signing it

Didn't work. Unfortunately, I didn't save an SHSH in time. Ah well, I guess I learned my lesson. Might as well see whats available w/ a Jailbroken iPad 2 since restoring the device would put me in 4.3.4.

From TinyUmbrella:

i meant that you can still jailbreak, but you won't be able to grab the shsh to do a restore to 4.3.3 if you were to have problems

    • Lots of people want a world where everything is personal and nothing is ever discussed rationally. List me as one of the people who doesn't think that's a good approach.
    • I think it's great that we're learning more about the early universe through observation. Knowing that our assumptions were off is a good thing. Once space based gravitational wave detectors exist, we may be able to "see" into the period where the universe was still condensed before matter formed. That'll be cool
    • yeah, the "but X had it first" comments rarely add any value. Sometimes it is interesting that a feature gap for a seemingly simple feature can last for years or decades, but in this case, it is such a minor feature that I doubt anyone really cared.
