Hey all sorry to bother you but i just wondered would if anyone had any experience in doing this? Mainly with computer parts as i would like to upgrade my computer and from what i can gather (without shipping fees so far) it seems i can get better parts a little cheaper as you will see below i have just never used anything like this before so wondering if i am saving or not lol

Does newegg even ship to the UK ?

?188 from US, then add shipping, your not going to be saving anything over ?212 from the UK

And along with trying to save a few pennies, what you going to do if a part is faulty ? Then you have to ship it back to the US and wait weeks for it to be replaced etc etc

Not worth the hassle - buy from your own country

@Detection - No new egg does not deliver to the UK its only USA and Puerto Rico i'll explain more in a second.

@Jakem1 & Cooky560 - This is something i need help understanding.

Ok here is the plan, first i was going to set up an account with http://bongous.com "PACKAGE AND MAIL FORWARDING SERVICES - When you get a US address and EU address from Bongo you can shop USA and shop EU websites. Packages are sent to your Bongo address for forwarding to your country."

Now according to that website, i can make multiple orders and let them know there will be a delivery to them, they then put all the items into one box to help keep the costs lower (Consolidate shipments)

Example: consolidation_example.jpg

Now of cause i dont know how to actually work out the tax but im guessing it would be this page: https://bongous.com/shipping-rates.php this is why i need help im no good when it comes to working things out specially money to me its here today gone tomorrow wow had a great time! lol Im guessing i wouldnt see much saved though.

VAT is 20%, so add 20% to the total price of whatever it is and that's your tax, VAT is also payable on services, so the shipping is taxable also.

So if your newegg total is $400 and your courier wants $100 thats $500 and VAT would be $100 (20% of $500) making the total $600

You have to pay DHL ?1.25 or 2% of duty +VAT as an admin charge too, if it isn't paid upfront. Which is surprisingly reasonable.:)

Also why are you buying from overclockers? Ebuyer + Amazon are usually cheaper, and offer free delivery and better customer service.

Tbh ive just been looking around overclockers is about a 10minute drive, but may use scan or aria their prices seemed a little better than ebuyer never thought about play or amazon will check them too!

Thanks to everyone that replied i thought i was getting a decent deal but after tax and shipping comes out worse it seems.

You can get free next day delivery with Scan if your a member of AV Forums. ;) Plus they use DPD who give an estimate delivery time.

Not worth it really, Better off buying from overclockers.co.uk or the likes. By the time you have paid for the shipping, import tax etc (I have had to pay it 2 out of 3 times, even if they were sent as gifts) It just isn't worth it.

NewEgg has United States | Canada | China. They need to add a Europe site too like in Germany with an English option or something.

Do people have to pay a vat tax in the uk if shipped from Europe? If they do then a shipping warehouse in England would be good so the UKers can avoid the VAT.

Thanks for that, is there any catch minimum posts etc etc?

Yeh i see that now i didnt realise had to pay tax on top of that, i used the overclockers site because they are close to me but if im honest i do try and avoid buying from them unless i really need the parts that instant they are more expensive and support is a joke on top of that since they moved its abit of a pain.

Would be nice, just depends on if the prices were still so competitive all i ever see amercians talk about is newegg or possibly tigerdirect.

  • 1 year later...

Seeing as mods removed the necro post, I thought I'd shed more light on importing from the USA to UK. Lets take for example the Intel i5 3570k

Newegg has this for $219.99 with free delivery (At the current exchange rate this is ?136.19)

Amazon UK has this for ?162.74 with free delivery

Most people order a few items and dropship these in 1 go to offset their dropshippers delivery costs but these vary depending on the package weight but for the sake of it, say we are ordering just this CPU. Newegg will ship this free to your dropshipper in the USA. Your dropshipper with then forward this to you in the UK for about $40. So your cost has now risen to $259.99 or ?160.95.

Now onto customs charges. The commodity codes for most computer parts means you pay 0 customs duty but if you import anything worth over the value of ~$24/?15, you have to pay VAT at 20%. So that processor you originally thought was cheap at ?136.19 and then ?160.95 (customs value) after your shipping costs will be subject to 20% VAT (?32.19) which brings your total cost to ?193.14. Finally in the UK, it's mainly Parcelforce who handle getting imported items from customs to consumers. They will add ?13.50 as their 'clearance fee' so after all charges, your total landed cost will be ?206.64.

Now if you're unfortunate enough and find your CPU is faulty, you will have to ship this back to the USA and cover all costs again if you want it replaced. This doesn't phase some people but in the context of things with added local support and warranty, you're probably better off ordering locally because that sweet deal from over the pond may not look so sweet after factoring in all costs.

    • Wonder if they will let you go into an Apple Store and have your white glass back swapped for a silver one, will they refuse even if you pay?
    • Honestly that feels even more useless than it did when Win11 was first released. In 2021, the uproar was somewhat justified, but only when comparing how good we've had it since Windows 7. Prior to that, a new Windows release would often require new, or very recent hardware. Windows XP wouldn't run (in any usable way) on hardware released when it's predecessor Win98 was released (let's ignore ME). It was time to shift the goal post, and the way Microsoft did that was actually ok. People have still had another FIVE YEARS of free software support with Windows 10, and those of us who want to have used these tools to bypass the limitations, all while understanding the impacts that may have. Most laptops don't last 5 years (sadly), so now the youngest unsupported hardware is 9 years old, and apparently has another year of support with Windows 10. That's good. Meanwhile, understanding the impacts and limitations, I have my 2013 laptop running Win11 perfectly fine. The thing that's failing on it is the hardware, the 2.5" SATA cable/chip is failing and corrupting the SSDs I put in. Thankfully it has a functional M.2 sata drive that works fine!
    • iPhone 18 Pro drop-test video and photos leak on the dark web following a data breach by Hamid Ganji iPhone 17 Pro - Image via Apple Apple is seemingly facing one of the biggest data breaches in its history, and just a few months before the official debut of the iPhone 18 Pro series, photos, a drop-test video, a supplier list, and key phone components have reportedly been leaked by hackers. Last week, we reported that Tata Electronics, an Apple supplier and iPhone producer in India, was hit by a data breach. As a result, it was reported that more than 200,000 trade secrets and confidential documents belonging to Apple and Tesla were stolen by the ransomware group World Leaks. According to Reuters, the group has now leaked supplier lists, component details, and photos of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models on the dark web. One of the materials leaked by the hackers is a drop-test video of the iPhone 18 Pro, which is due to launch this September. The phone is shown in a gray color and has the same familiar design we saw on last year's iPhone 17 Pro series. The device also appears to be quite durable, though it seems to be thicker than last year's model. One possible explanation is that Apple may be using a larger battery in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Moreover, Reuters says it has seen at least six documents mapping many components in the iPhone 18 Pro models to their respective suppliers, including details on chips on the main circuit board and on battery and camera components. The documents reportedly detail hundreds of parts that will be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that Apple classifies this data as sensitive and “is concerned about the documents being shared on the dark web as they relate to unreleased models.” Apple is reportedly investigating the issue but has yet to issue an official statement.
    • You do you, I've just said that it first appeared in "home" version before it will be available in "work" one. I use Edge only because it still supports MV2 uBO extension even on Android - I'll switch when they stop.
