Hi Neowinians,

I've been trying to change my Firefox 5 Portable default Taskbar icon to another icon but the original icon always come up no matter what I do. I tried to create a shortcut of the Firefox icon and change the icon but that has not worked either (it duplicates the default icon instead).

If any of you could help me, it would be greatly appreciated

Thank you.

HI

I don't know hot this work with Portable version, I've never use it.

But If You say that You can't change icon in standard way then just open application in, for example, Resource Hacker (freeware) or Restorator 2007 (free trial) and change icon direct there, easy to do ;)

Is the problem that you can't change the icon of the pinned launcher, or that there are two icons in the taskbar while Firefox is running?

The problem is that I can't change my firefox 4 portable icon- but I'm gonna consider what Semtex's suggestion and see if I can fix the problem -

I've attached a picture that might help you better understand what's happening.

Ok, guys, i tried restorator 2007 and I used it to change the icon of Firefox Portable and it did. The only problem now, is that Firefox.exe is no longer working. When I double click on it (or do a "Run as Administrator"), it doesn't do anything. Any Idea why it's doing that or has anyone experienced that before?

PS. I've also tried ResHacker in the past but it changed all my other icons to white. I had to reinstall Windows 7, System Restore wouldn't fix the problem.

Thank you.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly which icon you're trying to replace. Is it the actual firefox.exe or the launcher which is FirefoxPortable.exe? Judging from the picture, it looks like the firefox.exe icon and reshack SHOULD work but it seems like you just botched it.

If it's the launcher then you'll have to compile a new one with a different icon that you wanted. All you have to do is to change the icons found in App > AppInfo and then use NSIS program to compile the FirefoxPortableU.nsi file found in the source folder which is FirefoxPortable > Other > Source. You can find a NSISPortable at the PortableApps site and try it yourself, its pretty simple to do or you can upload the icon here and I can make it for you.

Even if you do change the launchers icon, you'll still have to reshack the main programs executable (firefox.exe) or you will have 2 different icons show up on the taskbar, the pinned launcher and the main apps icon when its running (which seems to be one of the problems you're having). If you can't use reshack then try this icon changer found here

So I tested it out myself and funny enough, I encountered the same problem as you :o I changed it to a custom icon but it still shows the default firefox one when the app is running... weird. Workaround is to pin the running firefox app onto the taskbar and it somehow magically changes to the custom icon. Downside to that is you'll have 2 of the same icons on the taskbar, one for the firefoxportable launcher and the other for just the main firefox.exe.

This has stumped me as well because it happens to the normal firefox install and not just portablefirefox. It shows default icon when app is run but then changes to the custom one when pinned... pics to show what i mean...

The Fx Icon on the left is the portable firefox launcher and when I open that, the default firefox icon is shown on the right of it... unless of course I pin it to the taskbar and only then will the icon change.

I guess we're outta luck. Choices are to have 2 Firefox icons on the taskbar or just run normal firefox install with custom icon and pin it.

That is very strange situation, I've change almost all my icons in system, some direct in apps with Restorator 2007 and all of them always work without any problem...

I've one more suggestion, there is also a possibility with creating custom shortcut in Windows 7 and then You have also chance to add custom Icon, maybe this will work as should work...??

@DudeBro

Did You delete iconcache.db after changes and restart system? Maybe this will help?

Why not create a new shortcut to the *.exe with the icon you'd like to use, and pin that shortcut to the taskbar? Because you haven't really answered Xinok's question. Are you trying to change the icon of a pinned Firefox shortcut, or do you want to change the default icon so that it'll look the same on other devices. If it's only on 1 device; just create a new shortcut, change it's icon and pin that shortcut to the taskbar.

Hello Capric0rn, thank you for taking some time to help out

To answer your question, the problem is that I can't change the Firefox icon that appears on the taskbar (All I want is to change the taskbar icon so that it matches my other black icons (see attachment)

I tried to make a shortcut of firefox and change its icon and then pin it to the taskbar (just like I did for my other programs and just like you suggested), but it's not really giving me the result I wanted. Instead it shows an additional default firefox icon next to my pinned icon, and that is something I don't want...

I tried both restorator and resource hacker but none of them are giving me results I was hoping for (In fact, resource hacker changed all my icons to white and restorator made firefox unusable)

I hope you guys understand what I'm trying to accomplish, please take a look at the screenshot.

No problem at all :) Have you tried unpinning it and then re-pinning the newly made shortcut? On my end this works perfectly fine and when I load Firefox it doesn't create an additional button on the taskbar.

Yes, I just tried to do that - It still doesn't work - firefox is still duplicating both icons.

Yes, I'm aware of icon cache rebuilding. But the problem was in fact that I didn't replace ALL the icons properly doh.

Heres a screenshot guide for reshack if youre having trouble ruxx. If you notice from the drive path, you can tell which executable is the one that needs to be reshacked.

Reshacking or recompiling the FirefoxPortable.exe launcher isn't necessary. In fact, reshacking will break it, so it needs to be recompiled with a different icon. Otherwise, just pin it to your taskbar and right click on its shortcut properties to change it's icon. Make sure you rebuild your icon cache. Google if you don't know how. It's simply deleting iconcache.db but restarting explorer seems to work as well.. or do both..

Not sure if it also bothered you but using portable firefox means you'll always get that extra icon to appear on the taskbar. No way around it... actually there is... but it defeats the purpose of using portable firefox and i don't wanna explain it. Hint: cmd line switch -profile -no-remote

While this thread is quite old, here is an easy way to use a custom icon for FirefoxPortable. Save the custom icon as this file:

(yourprograms)\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\chrome\icons\default\main-window.ico

Create the new directories chrome, icons, and default if they don't already exist. For more details see:

    • I am not surprised because life is the product of a lot of biochemical and physical processes that releases various energies as a by-product. The only thing new here is the detection of these photon emissions. The researches noted this "glow" is not a metaphysical one. They don't even immediately end when one is dead. Things like fires, light bulbs, and on a bigger scale stars release a lot more "light" and they are hardly alive.
