Microsoft TechNet Subscription Standard

Recommended Posts

I am wondering how many computers I can install software from the 'Microsoft TechNet Subscription Standard' on for testing purposes with the provided keys?

I have around 5 to 6 different configurations (notebooks, netbooks, desktop computers) I would like to install this software on.

Can this be done with this type of subscription or do I need to have another one?

With Standard you get 2 unique keys. Each key can be used on 10 different systems.

If you are going to have that large of a "test" environment, you would probably be best going with the next step up.

So 2 unique keys and 10 different systems, makes 20 in total right? So my 5-6 computing environment would suffice.

Do these computers have to be in a single (network) environment or can be tested from different locations/places? (thus with different IP-adresses from different ISP's probably)

And what exactly do you mean by "you would probably be best going with the next step up"?

it varies according to level and product this chart is from the technet site.

Not Applicable: No key is needed to install this product.

Retail: This key allows multiple activations and is used for retail builds of the product. In many cases, 10 activations are allowed per key, though often more are allowed on the same machine.

Multiple Activation: You can use the same key to activate multiple copies of the software. MAKs are generally used with Volume Licensing builds of a product. Typically you will only be provided one MAK for a given edition of a product.

Static Activation: Key A key is required for installation of the product, but the key does not require activation, so it can be used for any number of installations.

Custom Key: This custom key provides special actions to activate or install.

VA 1.0 : This is a multiple activation key.

OEM Key : This is an Original Equipment Manufacturer key that allows multiple activations.

My question on activation and number of machines is derived from the fact that on 5-6 different machines I would test mailnl use RTM-versions:

Windows 7,

Office Suite 2010,

SQL 2008,

Forefront and

Project (would be a nice to have, but not for the price of TechNet Professional),

Dynamics,

Desktop Optimization Pack

One machine will be installed with RC or development software on a Virtual Machines environment (so that I don't screw up this system in case the development software has its issues (as can happen with dev.software))

And... with 2 keys comens 1- activations/lkey, thus 20 activations. Are multiple machines allowed in this case, ot do I have to opt for the 5 licenses/50 keys?

I am not sure if you got the answer since this is a couple of days old post but i will try to answer here.

You get 5 keys for Win 7 and Office. Also you will get 5 keys for each version of windows 7.

5 for professional,Home prem,Starter etc but only one for enterprise version but it can activated multiple times.

each key can be used in 10 computer and any number of activation on that same computer.

so you can install win 7 ultimate in 50 computers and you can re install OS on that 50 computer and activate it any number of time provided you use the same key on previous install..

Office is different. you get 5 key each for each version so a total of 15 keys.

so with 15 keys u can use it 150 times. if you install office in a PC and activate it then its 1 activation.

if you uninstall it from the same PC and install it again and activate it again its considered second activation so you will only have 148 activation left.

sql server and other dont need a key. its in the install itself. I am not sure about Dynamics but it has custom keys in it..

trust me for your requirement its more than enough. I have only used 1 key of win 7 untimate and have installed in like 8 PC and i use the same for reactivation.

Thx for the explanation.

I counted my test-computers and have a total of 4 now (and maybe 5-6 later).

Let's go with the 4 for now...

Computer 1 - Win 7 Ultimate w/ key 1 and Office 2010 Pro w/ Office key 1 > 10 activations

Computer 2 - Win 7 Ultimate w/ key 2 and Office 2010 Pro w/ Office key 2 > 10 activations (or can this also be done with key1 for both Win and Office? or do I than have an average of 5 activations per computer (or 4 vs 6? etc))

Computer 3 - Win 7 Professional 2/ key 1 and Office 2010 Standard w/ Office key 1

Computer 4 - Win 7 Professional 2/ key 2 and Office 2010 Standard w/ Office key 2

Same same with other software, but Project, Forefront etc will be used on 1 maybe 2 systems for testing purposes (can be done with the 2 keys)

Can the abovementioned setting be carried out with the 2 keys per product from the Standard Subscription?

ok here it is

Computer 1- Windows 7Ultimate -Key1 = Activation 1

Computer 2- Windows 7Ultimate -Key1 = Activation 2

Computer 3- Windows 7Ultimate -Key1 = Activation 3

Computer 4- Windows 7Ultimate -Key1 = Activation 4

Computer 5- Windows 7Ultimate -Key1 = Activation 5

key 1 linked to computer1-5 now. it doesnt matter how many times you reinstall and activate win 7 ultimate on these computer with key 1 now. It would still be on Activation 5. if you install the key in Computer 6 then its activation 6

I have 10 win 7 ultimate technet keys and i have used only 1 key in about 9 PC's

I reinstall windows every 6 months using the same key for about 3 years now... all these reinstall dont count as activation.

I still have 9 keys left unused. ALSO I CAN USE kEY1 IN ONE MORE COMPUTER.

Office is different. if you have 5 key with 10 activation so that's 50 activation.

Install in computer 1 thats activation 1. ReInstall in computer 1 thats activation 2

once you reach 50 you have run out of the activation which is not the case with windows OS

MY SUGGESTION USE KEY 1 FOR ALL YOU COMPUTERS AND KEEP THE REST UNTILL YOUR KEY 1 REACH LIMIT.

SQL server 2008,Forefront and Project have Static Activation Key. the key is inside the install file and will have only 1 key and you dont even have to enter the key when you install it.The installation is unlimited since there is no activation involved.

I am not sure about Dynamics. If you still have questions let me know.

Great thanks.

But based on the STANDARD subscription I read only 2 keys will be submitted (with 10 activation each).

So basically this comes down to:

Computer 1 - Win 7 Ultimate w/ key 1 and Office 2010 Pro w/ Office key 1 > 1 activation Windows Ult., 1 activation Office 2010 Pro key 1

Computer 2 - Win 7 Ultimate w/ key 1 and Office 2010 Pro w/ Office key 2 > 2 activation Windows Ult., 1 activation Office 2010 Pro key 2

Computer 3 - Win 7 Ultimate w/ key 1 and Office 2010 Standard w/ Office key 1 > 3 activation Windows Ult., 1 activation Office 2010 Stand. key 1

Computer 4 - Win 7 Ultimate w/ key 1 and Office 2010 Standard w/ Office key 2 > 4 activation Windows Ult., 1 activation Office 2010 Stand. key 2

In this case I can reinstall/reactivate Windows 7 Ult. multiple times without getting into trouble.

And I have for 2 computer per Office version 10 installions/activations on two computers.

(and for computer 5/6 I can use either Win 7 key 1/2 or a different version, like Win 7 Professional and some activations of Office 2010 Pro/Stand, since there are 8 per version left)

Or the suggested "setup" I already made...

Are the maths correct here?

Yes, the math is right...... (and for computer 5/6 I can use either Win 7 key 1/2 or a different version, like Win 7 Professional)-- yes, its up to you but i would suggest using one key until it reach the limit.

I would also suggest you to use key1 when ever you install office untill you run out of activation.

by this way you know that one key has reached its limit and cannot be used any longer. if you use multiple office keys in multiple PC it would be hard to track the remaining activation left on each key. I had this issue one time i used key1(Activation 1) of office pro on my PC after about 8 months i re installed the OS and tried installing office pro key1 again but it says it reached the limit.... it was some issue or error so i was able to use key1 it only once. called microsoft but they didnt help. now i am on my key2 used about 7 activation. so for office be careful when you activate try using minimum number of keys possible and use it to the maximum.
