unknownsoldierX
CopSSH server 4.1.0 Default settings. Port 22, SvcCOPSSH user with default password, etc. Service is running. My Windows user account was added in the control panel even though instructions said it wouldn't be. I've tried deleting the user and adding it again. Haven't set up keys yet, as I want to make sure the basic password authentication works first. Connecting to localhost with PuTTY, using my Windows login gives me "Access Denied". Filezilla connecting to localhost pops up with "The server's host key is unknown. You have no guarantee that the server is the computer you think it is. Host: localhost:22 Fingerprint: ssh-rsa 2048 [key]" I click OK to continue and I get "Authentication failed. Critical error. Could not connect to server." Connection through LAN with ConnectBot on my Android says "Connection lost - Network is unreachable". Port 22 is open in Windows Firewall. Disabling windows firewall doesn't help. +BudMan MVC Posted September 20, 2011 MVC Share Posted September 20, 2011 And what is in your passwd file, I ran into the same problem - my account was not added, I had to add it but it was not added to passwd. Something is not right there for sure, has to be in passwd to work.. Don't have time to troubleshoot it currently. unknownsoldierX
Forgot to mention that. Here is the passwd file: SYSTEM:*:18:544:,S-1-5-18:: Administrators:*:544:544:,S-1-5-32-544:: sshd:unused_by_nt/2000/xp:1023:545:U-ComputerName\sshd,S-1-5-21-1988553356-2088532392-281167721-1023:/var/empty:/bin/false SvcCOPSSH:unused_by_nt/2000/xp:1024:545:U-ComputerName\SvcCOPSSH,S-1-5-21-1988553356-2088532392-281167721-1024:/var/:/bin/false I'm not sure how to go about adding my account to it. +BudMan MVC Posted September 20, 2011 MVC Share Posted September 20, 2011 its suppose to auto add from my understanding, but mine didn't seem to work either. It added my budman account into sshd config as match, but nothing was put into passwd file. When I get a chance, maybe later today I will look more into it. Whats easier is just running ssh if you need it in a virtual machine running your fav linux distro. But I will look into why this isn't working -- but just wanted to let you know I was having issues with it as well on clean install of the software. edit: hey got it working.. Seems to have to do with UAC, found this thread http://www.itefix.no/i2/node/12474 So I then deleted the budman account I had created without the running as admin, then readded it while running the control panel as admin - and now its working You will notice its in passwd file now as well, and under home it created a budman folder Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1026926-cant-get-copssh-server-to-work/#findComment-594326536 Share on other sites
unknownsoldierX
I don't want to run a VM. I just need a simple SFTP server with SSH. And actually, I just got it working. All I had to do was open the CopSSH control panel as administrator. Now the passwd is much larger and I can log into ssh and sftp. I can't find any config files in my user folder, so I don't know where the control panel saves it's settings when not run as admin. Weird. timmmay
I've had the same problem on a Win2k3 box. I haven't looked at the passwd file but I'll keep that in mind! Obviously the run as admin thing isn't an issue in 2003. +BudMan MVC Posted September 21, 2011 MVC Share Posted September 21, 2011 "All I had to do was open the CopSSH control panel as administrator." Exactly -- which is exactly what I said you had to do ;) --> "then readded it while running the control panel as admin" Who said anything about config files in your user directory?? It creates a user folder in your home dir. unknownsoldierX
Quote Exactly -- which is exactly what I said you had to do ;) --> "then readded it while running the control panel as admin" My reply was before you edited your post. :shiftyninja: Quote Who said anything about config files in your user directory?? It creates a user folder in your home dir. When you run the control panel without admin, it appears to make the changes but the changes don't appear in the passwd file. When I ran the control panel without admin privs, it showed my user name in the users list. When I ran the control panel as admin, that list was blank. Obviously, when not run as admin, UAC prevents it from modifying C:\Program Files\ICW\etc\passwd. But when it's not run as admin, it's saving settings somewhere, they just don't apply. By user directory, I meant that I didn't see any CopSSH files in the c:\users\unknownsoldierx\appdata\[Local/Roaming] folders.
