Multiple devices showing up in Tomato router log

Recommended Posts

Niece of mine posted in the Ubuntu forums how she had some weird IP addresses showing up in her router device list.

No one over there seems to have a clue what it is and/or what she is talking about.

As just one example, she was on a wireless laptop with a statically assigned IP of 192.168.1.101. She also has a Vonage adapter with an IP address of 192.168.1.15. There is this "other" IP address that was showing up of 192.168.1.124 under the name column of ubuntu. What or where did/does that one come from? She does have several computers both wired and wireless, but none of them have an IP address of 192.168.1.124.

In fact, she also had a second unknown IP of 192.168.1.148 showing up for a while with no name displayed!

As of last night though, everything is displaying properly with no extra IP addresses showing up.

Anyone here have any idea what I'm trying to describe and why this was showing up like this?

Network is set up with WPA - Personal and a very good password, so no need to go there.

See attachment for what I'm trying to describe.

Thank you

Since you're using Ubuntu, do you have Ubuntu One app on any of your phones or devices?

You could try to limit access via MAC filtering on your router, but that's probably a last resort.

What I can tell you about the .124 is its a D-link mac

MAC address 00055D Company D-Link Systems, Inc.

What do you mean no machine have a .124 -- clearly one did, I would assume it got it from dhcp.

Just because you have a secure psk, does not mean someone does not know the psk. Could be guy next door shared psk with, etc.

First thing in tracking down has been done, looked up the mac. Its a dlink device, now is it connected via wireless or wired? Should be easy enough to follow wires ;) If wireless - change your PSK.. Now your devices that can not get on you will find out soon enough when something doesn't work. If someone else leaching on wireless -- guess what that will stop when you change the PSK ;)

No Ubuntu One.

The only D-Link device is a lousy switch and as I stated, this was originally noticed on a wireless device and that switch is ALWAYS on but has never shown up in device list and is not showing up now.

I had her send me a screen shot of her connection as of this moment and here it is.

I'm not even going to bother with worrying about tracking down someone else connecting to the wireless device as I KNOW that is not happening.

Obviously, the attachment in my post above is showing a wired connection on IP address 192.168.1.101 and she is on a wireless conection right now, 192.168.1.113

Getting late. Time to crash.

Thanks for the replies thus far. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

I now know what the deal was here and can't even believe I didn't realize it instantly!!

I forgot that the router will keep a machine logged in for 24 hours (lease time) when using automatic DHCP!!

My niece and I both setup static IP's on computers and anything added to the network.

I/we just figured this out when she installed the new version of Xubuntu 11.10 and it did this stuff again.

Cripe! How brain dead can one be?! :s

Thanks for any previous assistance
