Why is it that users can only download at 1Mbps from my FTP Server?

I have an FTP server setup and I allow friends and family to download from it.

Why is it that the maximum speed they can download from it is only 1Mbps? - I was under the illusion that it uses my upload speed which is 8Mbps (BT Infinity)

your upload their download.

if their download is slow, it is going to be slow. try it from work/school/wherever to verify. check your bandwidth cap, it may be your misunderstanding of how the software is configured. (your upload is their download, and your download is their upload for instance...your download does not = their download).

I've checked and my FTP server is set to No Limit for Data Transfer limit.

I've just got a mate to do a test download and he confirm's that he always has a limit of 1Mbps from my server..........

I use Wing FTP Server...........and as you can see from the screenshot below - there is no limit

When you say they can download at 1Mbps, do you mean mega-BITS or BYTES, if you mean megaBYTES then they're downloading at a better rate than you should actually be getting.

Yeah, I suspect your line is 8 Mega bits, while they're downloading at 1 Mega Byte. Which is actually the same thing.

8 bits in 1 byte....so 8Mb/s=1MB/s

Theoretically if there was no lag, interferance or large overhead like TCP has, then yes.

Also most households will have a 8Megabit download speed so they may actually be downloading at their max speed, always used to confuse me when I was younger until I learned that mbps was bits and not Bytes... if only it was the other way around :(
