I updated my Iphone 4, the other day to IOS5 no problem.

Just tried updating my girlfriends Ipod Touch 4th Gen and it was taking ages where the apple logo is and just below is a progress bar, well this wasn't moving at all.

It eventually failed with a 1611 error. So I took it out restarted my PC, when I plug it in I get "USB device not recongised" plug it into iTunes and it says it's starting in recovery mode, do I want to restore bla bla.

I click yes and I just keep going round in circles.

I'm currently installing 10.5 on another machine to see if that helps, I've googled around and people say it could potentially be 'bricked'

As the Ipod is only 9 months old, It's still in warranty and can take it back.

The problem is, I have a personal message on the back which I gave my girlfriend (awww) so would they get this done again and sent to my house?

I also have a anti-glare screen on the front which was bought from their store, so surely I should be able to 'demand' a new one as their proudct is faulty, so why should I have to buy a new anti-glare screen - But this is the least of my worries.

Is it doomed then? Seems odd how it's only 8 months old or so, but I suppose it could go anytime and is better failing in warranty :(

Update - When I first plugged it into my PC it did say 12 minutes to download IOS. Now I've plugged it into my different PC, it's saying 43 minutes, so wondering if the IOS5 installation on my PC became corrupt somehow?

Will report back

They wouldn't do the engraving nor would you get the anti-glare screen back.

Can you put the iPod into DFU mode to restore it?

1) Hold the power button for 3 seconds

2) Press and hold both power and home for 15 seconds

3) Let go of the power button but keep the home button pressed for another 5 seconds

Try and restore now.

You can download the iOS (outside of iTunes; simply search the web for a download link) then you can hold Shift and click Restore and it will let you search for your IPSW file.

WARNING:

This tutorial will show you how to put your iPhone/Pod Touch into DFU mode. Please try this at your own risk, as I am not responsible or will not be held accountable for any damages done to your phone. Although there may be a resolution to almost all errors, please read the instructions carefully when downgrading so you won’t encounter any problems along the way.

DFU mode = Device Firmware Update mode

DFU mode is a mode where the iPod Touch/iPhone will be made to force a restore of the firmware into whatever version firmware it is given.

Getting your iPod Touch/iPhone into DFU mode is somewhat tricky, and it may require some patience/practice because timing is essential to get it to DFU mode and not into recovery mode.

1. First, Open up iTunes, plug in your iPod Touch/iPhone to the CPU's USB port. Turn on your CPU's speaker and make sure it is loud enough that you can hear it.

2. Hold down the Home button (top left for iPod Touch and top right for the iPhone with the screen facing you) and the Power button (located on the front bottom of your iPod Touch/iPhone) simutaneously, until the screen goes black and the device turns off. (past the red slider/slide to power off screen)

3. Now let go of the Power button, but continue to hold the Home button. Your iPod Touch/iPhone should have turned off and the screen should not be on.

4. After around ~10-20 seconds, you will hear a noise (beep/ding) from your CPU as if it had just recognized a new hardware device, now iTunes should recognize it in DFU mode.

5. After iTunes recognizes the iPod Touch/iPhone, let go of the Home button otherwise it will go into recovery mode and you will have to do the entire DFU process over again.

6. You will know when you have put your iPod Touch/iPhone correctly into DFU mode when the display is blank and that you do not have anything on your device.

And you are done, now you can install any iPod Touch/iPhone firmware on to your device via the iTunes SHIFT recovery method.

From the other computer.

It's put IOS5 on it, all apps in correctl folders (which my iPhone 4 didn't grr) but everything is working great now :D

No more updates for this iPod EVER again.

Thanks anyway Mattygdot, I almost had to use those destructions you provided :)

By the way, it seems like my iPod doesn't like any of the usb leads which I plug into the side of my monitor, my iphone is alright though, but when I plugged the apple charge lead directly into the front USB ports of my PC it works, so something is going on, but that's something very minor.

Especially as I can now sync to iTunes over wifi using IOS5

New purchases. Automatically everywhere.

iCloud can automatically download new music purchases to all your devices over Wi-Fi — or over 3G if you choose. Which means you can buy a song from iTunes on your iPad at home, and find it waiting for you on your iPhone during your morning commute. All without having to sync.1

Also, any idea what could be causing "usb device not recognized" but if I try a usb port on ther front of my pc it works?

Whats more strange if I use the same port (which doesnt work for ipod touch) and plug in my iphone 4, it works fine :/

Was thinking driver issue but if it was driver the ipod touch wouldnt work in any port?

AFAIK each usb port has its own serial ID (or something along those lines to distinguish between the ports), which is why if you plug say a flashdrive or a wireless mouse into a different port then it was before it will sometimes redownload the driver

Very good point there. What's my solution to this as I've rebooted and there isn't a place to get any drivers as it comes in with iTunes I believe?

Is it best to carry on using a different port and wait until a new update of iTunes comes in, or just reinstall iTunes, or sometrhing else? hmmm

Typically, and this goes back to the original iPod days, iPods require a powered USB port and your monitor may not provide enough power for the device. We used to see this problem with people would use the front USB ports on their computer. Typically these weren't powered and plugging them into the back would rectify the "Unrecognized USB device" error.
