On a clean reinstall (or install) the correct and required sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers such as sound, video, etc.

The chipset drivers MUST be installed BEFORE attempting to install sound drivers or they will not load as one of the prime things the chipset drivers do is define (identify) what devices are on the motherboard.

The Analog Devices driver is the only Integrated Audio (on the motherboard) driver listed on the Dell Downloads HERE The Intel Chipset drivers can be downloaded from there too.

If you skipped the chipset drivers, install them, restart the PC and then install the sound drivers. Usually this will work but in a few isolated cases it takes a complete new, correct sequence, install to fix it.

So what ur saying dusco25 is that after I install the chipset everything should be good right because I have the multimedia driver installed...the volume is just not playing...

*again I'm running windows 7 ultimate

I am just saying it could work.. There could be many factors at play but its mainly a driver issue i would say.. If that does not work then you may have to buy another sound card.. since you are used to just onboard sound you can get a cheap SB for $25-30 and still be better than your onboard sound.. There is a lot of problems with older onboard sound drivers with Windows 7 that I came across working on others PC's..

Dusco25 is right, however the chipset drivers alone won't get your audio working. If you haven't already installed the current chipset drivers you may as well do that now while you're at it.

You mentioned you have the Realtek audio driver installed. Why? The Dell site says that your Dell Dimension 4600 should have ADI 198x integrated audio. Not sure, was it that other program that had you install the wrong driver? Or you specifically know it's a Realtek audio chipset somehow? If you don't actually have a Realtek audio chipset in your computer you'll need to uninstall that before doing anything else.

re: your audio driver, try Windows update & see if it manages to find a compatible/generic audio driver for you. You can also try opening the device in Device Manager & try telling it to search automatically for a driver (though you probably already tried this).

Worst case, you may as well try the XP ADI driver from the Dell website & see how that goes. It is unlikely you'll find a Windows 7 version of the ADI driver, or if you manage to find one it won't be from Dell.

Maybe it's easier to just buy & install a new Sound Blaster? I'd consider all this a reason to upgrade personally ;)

Thanks larrs77 and Discord....I managed to play with your comments until I came across windows update which somehow installed soundmax..rebooted and went on youtube...next thing I know the song that I wanted was playing ...I don't know how but I think SoundMax was the solution :)
