mr_han_solo
Hello, I am upgrading my core2duo system up to a lga1156 i5. I was wondering of I could use my core2 heatsink and fan for the i5. Judging by pictures they look almost exactly the same. I have tried searching google but I have been unable to tell if they are compatible or not. +PeterUK MVC Posted February 5, 2012 MVC Share Posted February 5, 2012 Why are you not upgrading to a LGA 1155? and if your getting a OEM LGA 1156 CPU your Core 2 Duo LGA775 heatsink and fan will not fit on LGA 1155 or LGA 1156. Astra.Xtreme
The backplate on the motherboard is probably going to give you issues. It might fit, but you may have to modify the LGA775 bracket to make it fit comfortably. Though, general rule of thumb is that sockets don't interchange period (CPU and heatsink). mr_han_solo
Thank you for the replies. I have went ahead and ordered a new fan/heatsink. @+PeterUK I idn't upgrade to a 1155 because I don't really need the extra performance. The gain is marginal anyways. Also I was able to pick up an i5-750 with heatsink for $115 and the mobo I wanted for $48. Couldn't turn down those prices. :/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1056210-core2-heatsink-with-an-i5/#findComment-594635092 Share on other sites

If money was so scarce & you are willing and knowingly chopping off your hands to save a buck - then that is your choice. But to buy into a dead technology (s1156) & think "i dont need the extra speed" right now - well - what about in a year from now ? I realize the CPU your purchased is a good CPU - but you should have bought the absolute most you could afford. You might think it was a good deal now - but what happens in a year or 2 when you have to upgrade again - spending more money when you would have been able to potentially avoid that by getting something better now. But, if it you blew all you could afford to blow - well - then you really dont have any choice - just sayin Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1056210-core2-heatsink-with-an-i5/#findComment-594635708 Share on other sites
