Adobe Reader X 10.1.1 Issues

Question

Anyone else seeing some strange stuff with Reader X? In the past few days I'm seeing the number of people complaining about Adobe Reader locking up shoot up dramatically.

We've been on this version for months and we haven't deployed any Windows/Microsoft updates so we're kind of stumped at the moment.

Any help is appreciated!

Here is what we're seeing in Event Viewer:

You could update to the latest version. While you're at it, if all you use Reader is to read PDFs and not interact with it, disable the JavaScript engine, and enable Enhanced Security. (just some security tips)

Dunno exactly could be the problem, have your tried opening different PDFs, or is it locking with only a single PDF?

We haven't gotten around to testing 10.1.2 (Our financing system relies on Adobe Reader, so it gets tested every which way possible) so we can't deploy it just yet.

It seems to be random PDF's; one moment it can't open DOC1.PDF; then next it will but then won't open DOC2.PDF.

Can't seem to find any pattern to this at all.

My suggestion is going to be completely for testing purposes. Can you install an older version, grab the acro32.dll & copy it to your desktop. Uninstall & then re-install the correct version and paste the acro32.dll where it belongs and test it ?

I know its not a solution - but it might be enough to have the IT Dept move to a different version. In all actuality - is there anything the version you are using had over the previous one it was using ? Most of the time Acro gets updates to plug all of the gaping security holes I assume.

Personally I use foxit - but I realize that is not an option you have.

Well; I am I.T. and one reason why we haven't begun testing 10.1.2 is because of all the printing problems we're seeing on the adobe forums and printing from Adobe is something we do a lot of!!

I'll try a different version of acro32.dll and see what happens.

I'm not aware of any Adobe Reader related issues where I work... and I've been pushing 10.1.1 and 10.1.2 to all of the systems that have been rebuilt since release. We rely pretty heavily on PDF for all training materials & for scanned documents.

It's probably used as much as Outlook and the rest of the office line for us.

If you are having problems with network printing, turn off Protected Mode.

Edit->Preferences->General->Uncheck Enable Protected Mode at startup

We've had to do this on many machines. I haven't looked for the registry key yet, but you might be able to turn that off in the Adobe Reader Customization tool.

EDIT: Haha. beat me to a reply. Hopefully it help anyone else.

Here is the registry entry to change that setting, also:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown]

"bProtectedMode"=dword:00000000

Yep, I have it in a GPO; ready to push out to all desktops. We're just giving it a day or two before we hit the switch.

    • I agree, especially if it is cloud sourced, like this one is.. but I wouldn't say no to a local AI assistant similar to the Zettlab one which would be really helpful with my large Photos library, but also to perform tasks like installing Docker apps rather than me having to do it via Docker Compose, but I don't think we're quite there yet. Synology Photos is somewhat AI, you can ask it to search for certain people (if you have tagged them and it will attempt to match similar photos to the person) and if you put a search term in for "cars" for example, it will show you all photos with a car.
    • I doubt that Google will keep the same price... it may go up from that list published.

    • So the card is targeted at headphone users - so the review should be from someone that uses this - maybe I can review a card next time.
