Mafia 2 for

Recommended Posts

I played it on PC and the setting was great but the missions were a joke.

They all practically followed the same pattern: Sleep, wake up to get a phone call, drive to meet and pick someone up, drive some more, (big) gunfight, drive the person back, the end. Just felt like no creativity went into the gameplay.

And when you have completed there really is very little to do other than walk around and drive or start fights with pedestrians. There's extra mission packs to download but I was pretty bored of the game by the time I completed it as you do a lot of driving. One thing that really did irritate me was if you died or failed a mission, you had to do all the driving again.

Noticed PS Plus members can buy Mafia 2 for ?8 off of PSN, worth it? I really liked the first one, but the second got a lot of negative vibes.

The collectibles are super annoying. The game is very linear but it's fun and enjoyable. For that price, it's a steal. Note that if you buy the Platinum version, it has all the DLC for just 3 more ?.

Played it on 360 and I say go for it...

One of the few games (I have to admit) that I had no "problem" playing through.

It kind of played itself! :D

^in terms of how much I enjoyed it.

Plus ?2.03 shipping.

Getting the DLC is a plus, but having it on my hard drive and for ?8 seems the better deal - In case I don't enjoy it that much and never get around to the DLC.

The DLC is terrible, you would not miss much by not having that. Its basically a load of timed missions with a few lines of text as a story... nothing like the actual game.

That been said the actual game is fantastic, the story and cut scenes really get you immersed in the game. One of the best games I have played in a long time.

I LOVED Mafia II when I played it. It's got a brilliant story (if you like Mafia stories anyway), great atmosphere and some pretty fun gameplay. It's deceptively linear, but it's great to have an open-world, at least to look at. Probably not worth ?30 but if you like mafia stuff then it will be ?8 well spent.

What I probably like most about it is the flair of the 1950s...

Any other games that are set in the 1950s and of such quality (or better)?

Seasons would be bonus!

L.A Noire comes to mind. It's an amazing game and also has a complete edition with all the DLC.

Already own it, however, is it set in the '50s? (Haven't played it so far)

I thought it's in the '40s?

I'm almost certain that it starts out in the 40s - if I remember correctly, it spans quite a long time frame, into the 50s.

That'd be quite cool!

I'll definitely start playing it tonight, fellas! :)

Yeah you're correct, starts in the early/mid '40s and goes on into the '50s.

Excellent, thank you! Must play it.

Two questions:

1) How open is the game as in... Can I take my 30 minutes off and do whatever the flip I want?

Mafia 2/GTA style... (granted, M2 isn't as good there as GTA, but you get the idea)

2) If so, how much is possible? (Scale 0 to 10 (0: not possible; 10: GTA style))

I heard it's rather restrictive...

You can pretty much go off and do what you want whenever you want, as long as you're not on a mission. The problem is, there's almost nothing else to do. Just think of it as a linear game set in an open world - having an open world makes it much more immersive, but don't expect to actually do much else other than the main missions.

There are street crimes to solve but those are defined by which desk you're currently working. There are landmarks to see, reels to collect (very tricky because you get absolutely no clue to where they are) and cars to drive. But the good part is the cases. Free roaming is fun because the city is faithfully recreated but there isn't much to do.

the first game i replayed MANY times since it was new in Aug 2002 on PC.

the 2nd game (which i also played on PC) is not as good as the first but it's still much better than lots of other games out there. it has a moment in the game here and there but it does not live up to the greatness of the first game.

they beat the GTA series if you ask me as the general gameplay/atmosphere and characters are just more interesting than GTA series.

Bun-Bun and playXray pretty much said it, while you can certianly go off adventuring as much as you'd like there's really no benefit of doing so (other than to tour the city and enjoy the views). There are some collectibles around and street crimes as they mentioned that work as a quick break form the main story action but that's about it. There's no other side mission type stuff like you'd find in GTA for the most part and yeah keep in mind you can only do so many street crimes per desk. All the street crimes pop up on radar so they're easy enough to track down as well.
