Is Desktop Linux Becoming Fractured as Open Source Matures?

Recommended Posts

The only "problem" Linux has is people like the ones posting here, that have NO CLUE how Linux or Open Source works, so the vast majority of you should have never posted, you come off as complete ignorant fools

I'd say zealots who only know how to react in a condescending fashion, much like yourself, are the biggest problem Linux as a platform faces.

The only "problem" Linux has is people like the ones posting here, that have NO CLUE how Linux or Open Source works, so the vast majority of you should have never posted, you come off as complete ignorant fools

Then enlighten us. How does open source work?

The thing is people working on big open source projects do more often than not get paid to do so.

Regarding why would a qualified professional contribute code for free, the answer is simple: because he wants to.

Just because you work for a software company doesn't mean you are working on the kind of project you are really interested in. Coding on your free time is a way to scratch an itch.

Get a new job. Its your choice where you work. If you made a bad choice keep it to yourself.

Yes clearly, I dont even use any form of open source I dont like the idea of non professionals writing my software.

You do realise that professional developers from companies like Intel, IBM, Redhat, Mozilla, Samsung, and even Microsoft contribute open source code right? To say that all open source developers are non-professionals is inane and reveals your ignorance of how free open source software gets written.

However it seems to me the problem is a lack of unity between open source providers. If everyone agreed to write open source for one compatiable enviroment

All the major environments/gui toolkits are compatible. They all use desktop standards.

there might be a chance of a "6 months of linux on the desktop" SERIOUSLY.

I can't tell if you're trolling or are just ignorant. Either way, you'd be better off sticking to your proprietary only systems.

Is the Linux desktop being fractured? No. Linux has always had many shells/DE's. The more variety, the better as far as I'm concerned. The two major toolkits GTK+/QT are what ground applications. Both of which follow freedesktop.org standards.

Shells come and go, much like WIndows 8's new Metro shell. But no one's accusing Windows of becoming fractured are they?

Linux has always had a greater choice of DE's, something that sets it apart from OS X and Windows. I don't see anything different happening here.

Get a new job. Its your choice where you work. If you made a bad choice keep it to yourself.

Just because the projects you work on aren't exactly what you'd prefer doing doesn't mean that it was a bad choice. You can be perfectly fine with your job but still feel the need to achieve something different in your free time.

    • The problem isn't with Epic, it's with the platform holders like Steam and Nintendo, they should be a lot more strict in their review process.
