It?s not rocket science. Well, maybe it is. Using his other big venture, the Space X rocket factory, as a background, Tesla Motor Co. CEO pulled the wraps off the company?s next new product, the Model X

Looks amazing, and it's hopefully the next step towards affordable electric cars. :) Starts from $55,000 to $75,000, and that's before any government rebates, so it's pretty much in direct competition with luxury SUVs like the Audi Q7 and the Porsche Cayenne, but with the advantage of cheap running costs.

Shame the electric cars aren't getting as cheap over here. The Nissan LEAF costs ?25,990 (almost $41,000) at the moment, and the only cheaper (full-size; the G-Wiz does not count) electric car around will be the Renault Fluence, out next month. That'll cost ?17,495 (about $27,500), but with Renault's electric cars, you have to pay a monthly price for three years to hire the batteries (in the case of the Fluence, it'll be ?76 ($120) a month), so in the end, the Fluence will actually cost ?20,231 (about $31,900). Not too bad, especially as with Renault, it means they'll replace the batteries for free if anything ever goes wrong, and it's got a 115 mile range, which is slightly more than the LEAF. I'm still dreaming of the day though when the Tesla cars (with much longer ranges and better performance) are around the same price as ICE cars...
