Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Recommended Posts

HBO is presenting a Star Trek marathon today and right now I am watching ST5. Seriously, what a horrible film. It had so much potential and they screwed it up so bad. The visual effects were 3rd class because ILM was not available at the time to do the visuals so they hired some unknown company to do the visuals. What a mistake. Wikipedia says that William Shatner approached Paramount about having ILM re-do the visuals but they declined his request. Wow.

I'll agree V was bad! I really liked IV (the voyage home) and the last TNG films were bad too!

IV was fun but its also kind of corny and shows the how silly the save the whales type stuff got in that era. I always joke that we need to save the whales, or else an alien probe will come in 500 years and destroy us. :)

Star Trek Nemesis was not too bad, but it could have been so much better. Insurrection was simply bad. First Contact was entertaining. Generations was the equivalent of Star Trek V. Simply horribly made. The movie seemed "hurried" and the way they killed Captain Kirk was an insult.

I'm against conventional opinion in that I think First Contact was a pretty bad film when you think about it. It had cheesy action lines like "assimilate this", and ruined the whole concept of the Borg by introducing the Borg Queen.

Generations actually had a nice theme and nice visuals. Some critics (Ebert) complained about the low lighting but I thought it was nice. The worst parts of the movie were the sideplots, the Duras sisters and the Holodeck. They could have gotten rid of those scenes and used the time to flesh out the main plot better.

Has anyone noticed btw that every single TNG movie ends with a one-on-one fight between Picard and the main villain, set to some sort of timer he's racing against?

Captain Kirk should have never been killed like that. They should have waited.

Punishment for Star Trek V. His idea for the plot. He blew the budget. His fault.

As bad as The Final Frontier is it doesn't even come close to how bad the first movie is... honestly, I cant even sit down through the whole thing.

I'll pretend you didn't say that.

ST:TMP is a flawed film, but it's good sci-fi and good TREK.

Captain Kirk should have never been killed like that. They should have waited.

I don't think the way he died was inappropriate in the context of the theme of the movie. It was after all partly about our mortality and the smallness of our lives. Making an epic death for Kirk would have gone against this theme. It was not what bothered me about the movie at all.

I found it quite enjoyable. It reminds me of Space Odyssey by its slowness.

As for V, Shatner should not have directed it.

Direction wasn't the only problem as Shatner had directed before in TOS: there was a writers strike, Bennett had to be dragged back into the project, the budget was tight so they hired non-union truckers & the Teamsters retaliated by getting friendly pilots to fly over the location sets, and because of ILM they did a lot of the effects themselves in-camera on set. Bran Ferren's (ex-Disney) effects company Associates and Ferren did the rest. It's lucky to have even been shot.

Star Trek V did suffer, but the plot was kind of weak. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, I think was the best of all the original ST films, though. It felt like a real movie, not just a 2-hour episode with a bigger budget.

Yes and it shows. They did a horrible job. The effects look like those of an early 1970s movie. The movie Forbidden Planet had better effects than ST5...LOL

Uhura: [Chekov and Sulu are lost in the woods of Yellowstone] Is there a problem, gentlemen?

Sulu: Uh, yes. We've been caught in a... we've been caught in a blizzard.

[Chekov blows on the communicator, simulating wind noises]

Chekov: And we can't see a thing. Request you direct us to the coordinates.

Uhura: My scanners show clear skies and 70 degrees.

Chekov: [stops blowing] Sulu, look. The sun's come out. It's a miracle.

best part of the movie.

best part of the movie.

The movie was funny. Dr. McCoy was awesome as always but it lacked good direction and visual effects. William Shatner simply didn't do it right. He wanted to duplicate the sense of humor and success of Star Trek IV but he failed. It's something that has been hunting him for a while now. Like I said before, he's been wanting to make things right by re-doing the visuals on it but Paramount refused to give him a budget to do so. i don't think they have forgiven him just yet.
