Expired/expiring domain name avilability?

Question

Was wondering if anybody knows about this...

Last night I decided on getting another domain name, almost exactly like one of my other domains. So I started popping in some ideas into a whois lookup and they were all in use with an expiery far from now, untill I came up with one name. It expiary date is yesterday (oct 4th, 2003) so I waited till today and checked and still says its reserved, even tho today is the 5th and according to the whois:

>>> Last update of whois database: Sun, 5 Oct 2003 06:32:52 EDT <<<

Thats today. Shouldn't the domain have expired and become availble? Internic also said to check the registar that handles the domain to see what they have marked as their expirey date is and its the same. Has anyone ever had experience on waiting on a domain name like this? When did it become availble.

I'm not trying to be a cybersquatter or anything, its just a decent name quite similar to one of my existing ones, and something I can very much use as a sister site to. In the whois info contact info it says "This domain adress is available" above the name and when following the url to see if its a page it says "The website you have requested has been cancelled." which leads me to believe since its not been renewd is that its someone who was trying to resell it and couldn't so is letting it go. If I thought they's be still using it i'd not bother wasting my time, and don't wanna have to dispute over the name with internic or whoever handles those squatter complaints.

It appears now that there is a grace period of a month or 2 after a name expires. Its a new thing that seems to block a domain from being take for 1 or 2 months after it expires. You usually get emails for 2 months before it expires, i don't think they need an extra 2 months to get ot back after it expires.

Edit : And doh, I guess the owner of that domain name didn't find the grace period lame I guess... they ended up re-registering the domain name :(

was realling hopin to have multimediaX.com

hehe ya but it costs moeny to use snap ins (the service that does that)

Ok this is getting a bit retarded and they are making it harder to get a domain... i tried one name... it expired on july 24th of this year

******** name blocked out by me

Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.

Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net

Referral URL: http://www.opensrs.org

Name Server: *******

Name Server: *******

Status: PENDINGDELETE

Updated Date: 04-oct-2003

Creation Date: 24-jul-2002

Expiration Date: 24-jul-2003

and I can't even get that one cause its pending delete (to be put back in the availble pool). Coming up with and getting a domain name is such a pain in the ***.

    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
