VW Passat 2006 [UK] Stop oil pressure. Engine off.

Started the car this morning at around 5am.

I usually let the engine run for a few mins, just to get things going. I drove about 3/4 mile then got an error "Stop oil pressure. Engine off. See owners manual." with flashing red oil light.

The car didn't "conk out". There were no noises different to the normal everyday sounds I'm used to while running/driving.

I took the car back home and it's left there at the moment, and I'm going to check the oil level when it's day light.

When I turn the engine off, there is usually a "hum" noise that kind of "tails off after around 3-5 seconds. This has been like this ever since the fuel pump was replaced. However, when I turned the engine off this morning, this tailing off noise was more constant and lasted around 10 seconds longer than normal, before it "tailed off".

Not sure if that is related at all, or just co-incidence.

I have seen a few subjects using Google, that the oil pump has a known design fault regarding the "Balance Shaft module" & regularly fails in the 2006 2.0l TDI?

If VW knew, and still know about this, then surely they should be responsible for any repairs? [As with the Fuel Pump silent recall and recent Injector Failure issues they knew about? Both of which I've had replaced by VW for free.]

Any help appreciated.

Yes I know, but I was hoping for info from other Passat owners.

I know this particular model has had a lot of regular problems over the years, e.g Fuel pump, injectors, most of which VW knew about and still do know about. All of whihc I think is a bloody disgrace if they've known about common faults and faulty parts and don't repair them and just hope it doesn't happen.

Kind of burying their head in the sand scenario.

could be a bad sensor or it could be worse.

From another forum:

"You didn't get the warning at idle, because the warning (for some odd reason) is disabled below 2000 RPM. That it came on when you moved off (over 2k) is proper operation, and indicates you probably really do have an oil problem - most likely the dreaded clogged oil pump screen. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR until proper oil pressure has been confirmed with a manual oil pressure gauge. It's kind of normal for the warning to come and go (at first) as the oil pressure will vary with temperature, load, RPM, etc."

Edit:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Stop+oil+pressure.+Engine+off.&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe

I have a passat, buti t's petrol and 2002, but do know quite abit about the passats.

First of all, I'd check the oil for sure as it can throw this error. Check then check again with the oil when the engine is cold as this will be the most accurate.

I know you said it seems common but I've just checked the recall website and nothing about it (VW are usually good, as they want to keep up their reputation)

For a quicker 'fix' if it was just a sporadic fart in the system disconnect the battery for 10 mins to plug back in and see if the issue re-occurs, if it does then you know there is a problem and not just a one off)

So I'd try that, then if possible get it booked in for some diagnostics at VW (yes it's more money, but the tools they have are designed for VW's!)

Or if you don't fancy a diagnostic just yet register at http://www.ukpassats.co.uk got loads of very helpful people there :)

It's the oil pump. My mech changed oil pressure sensor and did service on the car but the problem still persisted. So now it's time to change the pump.

Hey guys this problem is not the end of the world. Chances are its just the hexagonal drive shaft on the oil pump. We have loads of the 2.0 tdi Passat being used as cabs in Eastbourne and this is a common problem for are garages, thanks Volkswagen. Pls when the car tells you to stop DO SO and hopefully no extensive damage will take place to the engine, the worse I have known is the vacum pump to go. This is not really a do it your self job but then not to expensive either. Always keep good clean oil in this engine, it really pays. When I have more time I will submit a more detailed report.

    • I was using searxng for about a year , self hosted, but results were starting to timeout and eventually it became unusable so I switched to degoog. Much better for my needs, more polished and add-ons like maps and calculations etc

    • Hello, I am not as familiar with AMD CPUs as I am with Intel's, but as I understand it, that's a mid-range CPU from about three years ago.  I would think it to be fine for everyday casual-type use.  A larger SSD might be better, but with storage prices these days that's a decision that has to be carefully thought about.
