OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Wish list

In all fairness people said the same about iTunes running on Windows and OS X running on Intel. If anything I've learned to never say "never". I wouldn't hold my breath on it happening anytime soon though.

Hmm, that's an idea. iTunes only made it to Windows when the music store launched. Apple take a nice cut out of all sales there and on the app store. Considering how much they're making from digital sales, releasing a retail OS X for PCs could significantly increase the store userbase, possibly cancelling-out any losses from hardware sales. If it made financial sense they might consider it, but the fact is their current strategy has them rolling in money. So if it ain't broke...

Hence the part:

Fix launchpad. It's awful right now. It could be so great if we more options to manage the icons in there. Even if we could sort alphabetically and exclude certain apps it would be better.

oh god this. Certain Apps dump a heck of a lot of rubbish into it (I'm looking at you adobe master collection) eg, uninstallers, random support apps and so on. I want to be able to hide those rather than have to folder them off into various "Misc" folders.

- Do a major overhaul on Color Picker (this includes adding hexadecimal colors like #003366)

Download this Colour Picker extension and be happy: http://panic.com/~wade/picker/

As for the rest - everyone is filing these at https://bugreport.apple.com/ as well, right?

I'm using Launchpad Control to keep Launchpad in check. Fully agree it's beyond insane that you aren't able to hide items from Launchpad like you can hide preference panes in System Preferences.

1. I'd like for the iPhone 4S's Siri feature to integrate in to OS X. But instead of talking to your computer you still talk to your Phone it merely connects to your home network and then does stuff to your computer. So you could say for example "Play some jazz on my Mac" or use your phone to dictate to your computer for typing. I think this would be good because it's something you can hold close to your face, adds integration between their products (which is something Apple is really big on) and the iPhone 4S has the perfect Mic setup for it.

2. Stop blanking out my other displays when I full screen applications! - It is so frustrating that I can't even full screen VLC now without my other displays becoming completely useless.

That is all :p

I'd like to see:

- better handling of multiple monitors with Mission Control/Spaces

- allow for whatever screen zoom I'm using applied only to the monitor the cursor is in

- some basic file management functionality in the Open/Save dialog boxes (context menu, rename etc)

- refresh of the Font/Color Picker tools

- split views in Finder

- when multiple files are selected in Finder, change the Get Info action change to Show Inspector by default

How about a multi-monitor menu bar? For an OS that claims to be for professionals, having the menu-bar for the current application ON ANOTHER MONITOR is the most backwards thing in UI design I have ever seen; it's one of the major reasons I get frustrated with OS X.

Other things:

Address bar in finder.

Address bar in Open/Save dialogue

Ability to hide Applications that are part of OS X (Photo booth, for example)

I want a bug fixed :

- When I click on the Finder icon in the Dock, I want to be 100% sure a Finder window to open if there is none opened. I can?t stand right clicking on the Finder > New Finder Window.

What?.. click the finder dock icon opens finder perfectly for me.

What?.. click the finder dock icon opens finder perfectly for me.

I bet it happened to you at least once that you clicked on it and it wasn?t opening a new window and you thought it froze. It happened on my personal 3 Macs here so far, since Leopard I think. If you?re a Pro user, you?ll right click and do Open New Finder Window and it?ll do it right away. If you?re not a Pro user, you?ll just wonder what?s happening and think it?s buggy and OS X sucks because arguably the most crucial app won?t launch.

The Mail app in fullscreen mode needs some work too. I like using mail in fullscreen mode, but when I go to write a new message, there's no way to go back to the message list without saving the new message to drafts. I should be able to somehow switch between the message that I'm composing and the list of messages without cancelling the message that I'm working on.

Oh ya, and I want to stay in fullscreen mode at the same time. I understand Apple's desire to make consistencies between apps on iOS and Mac OS X, but they don't have to act exactly the same between the two types of devices.

- when multiple files are selected in Finder, change the Get Info action change to Show Inspector by default

They should have had this in version 1.

When I keep seeing this not appear in new OS refreshes, it makes me wonder how much of a "power user" the folks inside of Apple HQ actually are.

  • What about a graphical SVN feature built in to the Finder? Just like TortoiseSVN does with the Windows Explorer in Windows. I like Versions SVN but it would be cool if that had Finder integration.
  • A multi monitor management tool similar to Windows' Ultramon application that adds useful controls such as:
    ultramon-review-lg1.jpg

I bet it happened to you at least once that you clicked on it and it wasn?t opening a new window and you thought it froze.

...nope? Works 100% of the time for me. If there's no Finder window open, it pops open a new one.

Damn it. Since the beginning, I?ve always been unlucky with these weird bugs in OS X. I?ve always said that OS X didn?t have a lot of bugs, but the ones it has are really strange. At least they are few !

Tried better touch tool? I just swipe up on my desktop now and it opens finder for me.. works every time, try it!

Everytime I have to work on a Mac, I always install this little app.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, this is what I was looking for. I had it a while ago, but lost it (I think it?s when I changed my Mac).

In Calendar :

- Ability to see which date is selected : this becomes useful when copy-pasting events and selecting a date with the arrows on the keyboard. At the end of a month, pressing the right arrow would go to the next month. If I?m not mistaken we knew which day was selected prior to Lion, so this would only fix a regression.

Maps :

- How many times do you take your computer to trace a route from point A to point B ? Yeah, let?s bring OS X on par with iOS once again. But don?t use Google Maps, because it would be simpler just going to Google Maps in Safari? Instead, bundle an app similar to Google Earth, but use the 3D wizardry from C3 Technologies, a company bought by Apple.

God I hope they will finally add cut/paste files. Others have had that feature for over a decade now and its one of the most annoying things for me. I bought pathfinder it drove me that mad.

Why also cant I set which spaces apps launch too like before? I had having to arrange my spaces each time I reboot. At least now the "restore windows" setting is saved so I dont have to keep unchecking that.

Just hold Option/Alt while pasting to perform a Cut/Move. Holding Option in the Edit menu also changes the Paste menu item to Move.
