set startup list in win2k

Recommended Posts

hi,

since i'm kinda a newbie in this w2k-thing, i was wondering how i -as admin- can set the 'default' startup list for ALL users in w2k?

i know i can use the msconfig, but i believe these can only be applied on user level -and not on admin-level (and thus on all users)?

tia you guys,

kg

well.... actually i'm talking about programs/files getting loaded into the systemtray, like e.g. NIS, HP software etc.

How can I disable those?

Example:

On my WinXP Home machine, I use the msconfig function and than uncheck in the startup list (tab) the programs/files I donot want to startup when the computer starts up. However, this only applies to me only on my comp (but that's no prob, since I'm the only user :ninja: ).

Specifically:

HOWEVER, on the Win2k machine this is different, Here I would like to know if it is possible -as an administrator- to disable the programs which get loaded into the RAM (and you'll see in the systemtray) can be disabled for ALL users using the Win2k computer.

I think you would have to create a local group policy and then copy that policy to other computer.

or

I believe you can modify the 'all user' startup folder in c:\documents and settings\all users

good luck.

ps. silly, you can copy msconfig from other os to win2k and it still works :)

IPv6 or anyone else :) , how do I create a local group policy? And can I still use that policy as admin for all users?

And on modifying the 'all users' in startup folder in c:\documents and settings\all users.... a number of auto-start (in system tray) programs are not listed here. They can only be retrieved by means of msconfig :(

to do what your asking you need to edit the reg...

(I take no responsability for any damage this may or may not cause to your computer including but not limited to the following...

your girl friend / wife leaving you

your dog dieing / running away

having your whole city block blow up / loose power because of a Windows malfunction)

go to Start->Run ->Regedit -> HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

you can remove the keys for the programs you don't want to start up when you start up your computer... I know this works for W98 and WXP Pro... but it's been a while since I've worked with W2K and can't remember off hand... but it should work...

also with regards to downloading a copy of msconfig from either w98 or wXP for use in w2k you'll get a bunch of errors before you even get a chance to use the program... now I know simply ignoring those errors and going on your merry way to use the program will work.... but one must think about this... do you think there might be a reason Microsoft didn't include msconfig with w2k nor did they put out a copy of it for download on they're web sites??? My guess is the reason that they didn't do it is because it's not designed for nor ment to be run on W2k systems.....

okay thanx. it could be a reason MS didn't put msconfig into win 2k, because they simply didn't know ;) users could actuallu use it!

and can i -safely- delete the regkeys in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run? Or to put it differently, is deleting the regkeys THE SAME as disabling them from by means of msconfig?

Remember working with the Registry is always dangerious if you don't know what your doing... and sometimes even if you do know what your doing...

Or to put it differently,

I wouldn't recomend it... it will cause problems if you just rename it or edit it in some way as it'll still try starting what ever program you rename it to ... and if you change the settings the reg will try to open that program with the changed settings and further cause problems...

from that key I would say that yes it is... (or has been my experiance) and is some times even more effective to tell you the truth... but again be warned about using regedit if you don't know what your doing...

also be warned that you may have to do this in up to (if I remember correctly... and I usually don't) 3 or 4 reg keys as windows has a funny way of sometimes really wanting to make sure that the file get's started.... and so sets a program to start running in 3 or 4 different places incase one or more of them fail....

as I said in my previous post....
