You will ONLY get a 'confirm live account' email from MS if you've registered a non-hotmail controlled email, like [email protected] or something, you obviously won't get it to a hotmail email, and if you do things like open MSN you won't be able to do much until you've confirmed your email (and yes, it tells you this when you basically try to do anything), and you'd know about the email and expect it because they tell you about it on the passport sign up page.

If you've not signed up for a passport account to an external domain, the email is FAKE.

I got the EXACT same email yesterday. I clicked the link to see where it actually took me because I was curious and it indeed took me to a fake website designed to look like the Windows Live login page. If you look in the address bar, you could see the site wasn't coming from live.com

whats a preconfigured bookmark?

Something you have previously bookmarked in your browser and you trust to take you to the correct address. Not a link in an email that can be spoofed to take you to a similar looking site that steals your log in details than comes up with a message along the lines of sorry we cannot log you in right now please come back later.
