Is it considered bad programming to use the winsock.ocx file in

Microsoft Visual Studio 11? I know I use to use it when I use to program in vb6 but I am not sure if this technology is considered out of date now?

Look over System.Net.Sockets in MSDN, socket handling is covered very nicely in the platform. Or choose from plenty of third party alternatives, whatever fits your needs.

Yes it is; use the built in sockets functionality in the .net framework :p

Just a guess since he's coming from a VB6 and ActiveX background, doesn't have much of a choice. There hasn't been an unmanaged version of VB since then, and if he was using VC in the past there's a bajillion C++ libraries already out there.

You would write a client class. I prefer TCPSockets over Raw Sockets so I'd look for tutorials on those. They are basically Sockets but designed more for TCP Connections.
