First Look at Resistance: Burning Skies PS Vita Story Trailer

Recommended Posts

With

Resistance: Burning Skies marching steadily towards its May 29th release date on PS Vita, you may have been wondering who Tom Riley is and where his story fits into the grand scheme of the Resistance universe. Today we?re clearing up that question with a new story trailer you can watch right now!

Resistance: Burning Skies

is, at its core, a story about an everyday hero becoming a legend. On August 15th, 1951, New York City fireman Tom Riley is called away during a seemingly routine fire call and finds himself thrust into the midst of the brutal Chimeran invasion (

Resistance 2

fans: this parallels the period when Nathan Hale returns from Europe). Riley is possessed with a singular determination to find his wife and child, but along the way he?ll be embroiled in a far larger conflict that will determine the fate of New York and leave him a key inspirational hero of the Resistance.

For those of you watching closely, there were a couple other little tidbits revealed in that trailer, including new weapons and enemies. You?re also introduced to the Executioner, a hulking Chimeran monstrosity that boasts a powerful cannon for an arm. Needless to say, the Executor definitely won?t go down as easily as your standard Hybrid. You also caught a glimpse of the potent Hunter rifle, a Chimeran burst-fire carbine that is the predecessor to the Marksman from

Resistance 3. The Hunter also packs a surprise in the form of its secondary attack, which fires an offensive drone that attacks nearby enemies ? you can direct it to the left and right using PS Vita?s front touchscreen.

Let us know what you think of the trailer in the comments! And stay tuned: In April we?ll be answering your most burning questions about Resistance: Burning Skies ? first details on the multiplayer mode!

Looks good.

That looks REAL GOOD. And I am talking about the gameplay parts towards the end, the trailer itself has a cool visual style, but I am always just concerned about the gameplay.

yeah this looks pretty awesome. will probably buy later in the year.

Assuming it is offered digitally I will basically buy it on release day. Like a madman I purchased $150 worth of PSN gift cards when I first got the Vita, and so far I have spent $26.49 (Super Stardust Delta, Escape Plan, and $1.49 unlock all tracks for Motorstorm RC since it was free). So yeah, I have a decent amount of credit left for the PSN.

This game will be arriving today. I had credit at Amazon plus a preorder bonus of $10 from Ghost Recon, so got this for $22. So yeah, thinking it should be worth that for the first real FPS on a handheld. Will see.

Will do. I will probably do what I always do, share my initial impressions pretty quickly, then come back in a few days after playing it some more and probably contradict everything I had said on my initial impressions. But will definitely share my thoughts, may even write a review up for Neogamr if I can beat it quick enough.

Yeah, just saw the IGN review. Same deal with Kotaku.

So I have a choice to make. I forgot to remove it from my Gamefly queue, and it was shipped today, meaning I should have it by the end of the week. I can send it back to Amazon, but will be charged about $3 probably since it had nothing to do with them.

But then I watch the Gametrailers review, and I almost always agree with their reviews, and it has an 8.1. So yeah, I will keep it from Amazon. The idea of MP matches while taking a crap just appeals to me to much.

Very, very initial impression, as I only played about 20 minutes of the SP, is it seems okay. Touch controls are more responsive than I expected, which is good.

It is no doubt a classic FPS, meaning it is very straight forward.

Tried several times connecting to MP, no luck, not working right now. Nothing new with a Sony launch, but really? Not that many people own a Vita.

Figure I'll hold off on it for a little while until the price likely comes down a bit. Though I really wish the demo for this game wasn't 3.1GB otherwise I'd at least check it out to see if I like it. I'm trying to hold off on picking up a 32GB memory card for as long as I can and I'd need to delete a lot to get that demo to fit on this thing.

seems like the demo is the entire game then, right? that's pretty nuts.

hopefully this game will drop in price quickly. i need some Vita time!

Seriously, Sony needs to desperately get their act together with launches of their games and MP.

For those of you trying to connect online to Resistance: Burning Skies for multiplayer matches and experiencing problems, we apologize for the inconvenience. We recently discovered a bug in the multiplayer lobby, and are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue. We expect it to be resolved in the near future, and will continue to keep you updated. Thank you for your patience, and again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Figures the one and only time I pretty much am looking to break my tradition of not playing SP first and going to MP, the game does not work.

Oh well, gonna play the SP, see if it gets any better.

Have to say, the SP is mediocre at best.

It would have been a good game if it was released in 2002. Not even kidding.

It is so damn basic it is almost laughable.

After the initial cool factor of actually playing an FPS the way they are meant to be played on a handheld, the novelty begins to wear off, and the fact it is incredibly simplistic cannot help but rear its ugly head.

Now simplistic is not always a bad thing, but considering how far FPS's have come, and how far they go back with this game, it just feels like such a wasted opportunity.

The good news is the potential is absolutely there. There are very small moments of a good modern FPS, which indicate to me the whole thing could have been good.

The weapons are still great, and yes, I did say great even though I am throwing around other less then positive terms like mediocore and simplistic. The weapon wheel alone, while truly a nod to classic FPS's, is still one of my favorite implementations in an FPS. I love having a whole arsenal at my disposal, and not being forced to carry only 2 weapons at a time.

Ironically as bad as I believe the SP is, I still do believe the MP can potentially be fun. a HUGE reason the SP is awful is the AI is among the worse I have seen in any recent FPS's. So playing MP against other humans can indeed redeem the MP. A whole lot is going depend on the maps themselves, which considering the uninspired level design in the campaign, not holding my breath.

Sony really, really missed an opportunity here. Again the potential is there, it is just wasted on horrible AI, incredibly uninspired level design, and an overall feel that is inspired by FPS's from a decade ago.

Oh well, maybe I can get some trade in on Amazon for it. Really, really glad I used promotional credit towards purchasing this. If I had paid full price, this little mini review would have been way more critical. It would have went from **** to a huge steaming pile of ****.

Yeah the demo is the whole game, so the full game likely would come with some sort of unlock much like many PSN games do. Just that I've been trying to hold on to this 4GB memory card that came bundled for as long as I can and seems like too much of a hassle to backup everything and wipe it just to try this game out.

I kept hearing that, much like Larry said above, that the enemies seemed dumbed down at times, so that you'd be afforeded the time to properly use the touch screen controls without getting instagibbed. Can only really see myself picking this up now if I'm really hurting for other games to play.

I can say the SP campaign gets slightly better as far as quality, but the AI is still pretty bad. But I do find myself pretty damn impressed by the graphics at times, especially the outdoor scenes. I think I am so hard on this game as it really could have been something special. not sure if the MP works yet either, have not tried checking it out again yet.

i think it's interesting that in order to play the demo you have to download the whole game. it;s not the first game to do this, of course. however, when/if i decide to buy it, i'll have already downloaded it.

Okay, I will admit it, the MP is kind of fun. :D

Do not get me wrong, it is incredibly damn simplistic, and no doubt there is a some precision that is being sacrificed thanks to the smaller screen, although it is not as much as I expected it to be. Overall there is something oddly appealing about playing a true match of Team Deathmatch in the palm of my hands, literally.

I am not sure if it alone makes the game worth the $35 cost of admission for the digital download, but it is entertaining at the very least. And the SP as I said earlier, does have some moments.

Still though, I stick to my earlier statement of wasted opportunity. But I am not as against the game as I was initially just based on SP.

Okay, I have to say, my opinion of Burning Skies has now changed vastly over the past 2 days. One reason why. The MP.

It is incredibly simplistic. But it is no doubt at all MP Deathmatch. Having the ability to now literally pick up and play an FPS MP game while I am waiting for my wife to get ready to go do some shopping, well, that is just incredibly kick ass.

Here is the thing though. I still am pretty sure it is not worth the initial asking price of $35 (digital download) just for this MP. But it is now much, much harder for me to say that. As it is incredibly damn fun.

Literally me and my wife were about to go food shopping, and she just had to run upstairs to finish getting ready. I had 10 minutes tops. To fire up one of my consoles and then get into a match, on a good day is probably a good 3 minute venture. If not a bit longer. I grabbed my Vita, Resistance was still running, hit MP, had to sign into the PSN, and was still playing the match within 60 seconds. I was actually able to play 2 matches.

So yeah, it is not the best MP out there, but considering the scenario I just gave above, it is currently good enough.

And I really, really cannot wait for what else is to come in this genre. As I have always said, the potential is amazing.
